How to Get Motivated to Hit the Gym
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/motivation-to-workouthttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/motivation-to-workoutSun, 16 Apr 2017 12:30:00 +0000
One of the things I hear the most on the topic of working out is struggling to find the motivation to even start. Trust me, I've been there. I know it may seem like I'm always all about they gym with my overload of gym selfies (sorry not sorry), but I struggle to scrape up motivation sometimes, too.
Today I'm going to be sharing the simple trick I use to get my butt in the gym.
Think about why
There are three rotating reasons that people cite when they talk about why they need to start working out:
I want to lose weight.
I want to get healthy.
I want to gain muscle.
These are all legitimate reasons to want to start a fitness journey, but they aren’t getting you anywhere in the motivation department. All three goals are too vague and can therefore never be reached.
For example, I can say that I want to be healthy. But what does healthy really mean? Does it mean going to the gym three days a week and only eating poptarts once a week, or does it mean living at the gym and never touching food with added sugar?
Same goes for losing weight and gaining muscle.
If I cite gaining muscle as my ultimate goal, what do I really mean? Do I mean I want biceps that are somewhat prominent and a nice quad-hamstring separation, or do I mean I want rippling muscles everywhere? See how unspecific that goal got?
Then, if my goal is to just lose weight, then I’ll never stop because, well I’ll always weighsomething.
Get specific
So you want to lose weight?Well why? So you can feel better about yourself? So you can feel better about the clothes you’re wearing? So you can feel more confident about yourself?
So you want to get healthy?Well why? So you can stop feeling lethargic? So you can get clearer skin? So you can have better lungs to run a 5k? So you can live longer?
So you want to gain muscle?Well why? So can have more push when you run? So you can throw the basketball further? So you can actually serve a volleyball over the net? So you can feel strong?
Set Goals
In my experience, setting goals that have to do with the number on the scale and what my body looks like are not motivating. I find they hinder my performance and desire to hit the gym more than they motivate me to keep working out.
When being a certain size was my only goal, I had zero motivation and ended up being more scrutinizing than ever on my body. Now, I’ve learned to accept my body for what it is, while working for what I want it to be.
Setting goals that aren’t weight based is my advice. Instead, set goals related to your performance in the gym!
Examples:
I want to be able to do 10 push-ups consecutively.
I want to run one mile without stopping.
I want to do a pull-up unassisted.
I want to be able to walk up the stairs without getting winded. (Okay I like to say I’m in shape but I still get winded going up stairs.)
Sometimes your heart won’t be in it
And that’s okay.
Sometimes it’s becauseyou need to change up your routine. If you’re dreading that run on the treadmill, then maybe you should try a group fitness class, go for a swim, check out the weight room, experiment with other cardio machines, or take your workout outside!
This is something I used to struggle with a lot, and it really discouraged me. Which is why I had gym phases. I’d be all about the gym for a month, then I’d get so burnt out of doing of the same thing over and over again that I gave up and took a month break.
Now I mix up my routine and do different sorts of exercises every time I walk in the gym. Some days it’s spin class, other days it’s the stair machine and lifting. Some days it’s running outside, and other days it’s going hiking.
But then there’s also just burnout.
No matter what classes or workouts you try, you just dread it every time. This is when it’s time to step back and reevaluate why you’re there in the first place. Sometimes all it takes is a good:
“I didn’t walk here in the snow to give-up.”
(Totally used this all the time during the winter.)
Or, more generally:
“I didn’t come here to just leave.”
But sometimes even that doesn’t work.
If you’re really not into it, take a day off. Or a week. Don’t force yourself to run five miles if you don’t want to run five miles. It’s not worth feeling miserable. And it’s not worth feeling miserable if you do decide to skip a day. Everyone has skipped a gym day at some point in their life. It won’t kill you or set you back as far as you think. I promise.
Don’t let your decision to take a break dampen your motivation.
So what drives me? I want to gain muscle so I can do one unassisted pull-up. I want to gain muscle so I can lift more than I did in high school. I want to be able to run a mile in under eight minutes and thirty seconds. I want to be able to run a 5k without stopping so I can sign-up for one.
One Last Tip
Find a gym buddy.
All too often I underappreciated the fact that I had a constant group of people to workout with me in high school. I ran track and always had the same group of four girls to keep me up and running. Then when I came to college I had one amazing friend who would hit the gym with me up to five times a week.
Sadly, I left my distance girls behind when I moved to college and my workout buddy from last year switched colleges.
Suddenly I was working out alone all the time. And boy it is hard! Motivating yourself can be such a struggle sometimes. Which is why I recommend you find yourself a gym buddy.
Even if it's a long distance gym buddy like me and blogger friend and fellow fitness enthusiast Abigail fromLiving the Gray Life. She may go to a school that is an eight hour drive away, but we still motivate each other to do our weekly cardio and push ourselves in the gym.
So whether it's someone actually dancing alongside you in Zumba or it's someone blowing up your phone with texts to motivate you to do stairs, find someone to get you moving.
What drives you to workout?

How to Effectively Juggle a Job in College
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Juggle-Job-in-Collegehttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Juggle-Job-in-CollegeSun, 09 Apr 2017 12:30:00 +0000
Buckle up friends, because this is about to be a nice long detailed post where I spill my greatest secret. I’m about to give you the inside scoop on how I juggle going to college full-time, blogging, a semi-decent social life, gym sessions, and working two part-time jobs for a total of about 30 hours a week.
It’s about to go down.
Plan Plan Plan
This is a no-brainer I know. But I swear so many people look over this step. Which I don’t understand, because not having anything written out stresses me out. A.k.a. why I have a school/life planner, a blog planner, a dry erase calendar, and a real calendar.
I don’t want to go too in-depth with this one, because I have awhole postabout how I use all of them, so I’ll just keep it simple.
Write down everything. You will forget something if you don’t. Just like I forgot about my calculus 3 homework the other night until I was driving home from work.
Keep track of all assignments.Have all your projects, essays, and tests written down somewhere along with notes to start working on them before they’re due. The second part being the most important because procrastination is a thing.
Prioritize.Learn to do what’s most important first. For example, I get four calculus assignments a week. Three of them are due anytime before the end of the semester, and one is due exactly a week after it was assigned. I don’t have time to complete all four during the week, so I make the one that has a set due date my top priority.
Optimize your Class Schedule
When I was planning my classes for this semester, I knew I had to leave room in the morning to work at my on-campus job and room in the evenings to work at my off-campus job. This didn’t work out too well, since I have a 4:30 class on Tuesday and Thursday, but hey everyone needs a break from work every once in awhile.
I just officially confirmed my schedule for the fall last week, and again I made sure to leave time in the morning and afternoon. However, this time the mornings I have off I’m going to use to go the gym because I prefer morning workouts, and then in then I'll have a couple hours almost every day to do homework and hang out with friends before I'll be scheduled to work at my off-campus job.
Speaking of working…
Know Your Limits
I work at my on-campus office every Wednesday and Friday morning until my class at 1:00 p.m. The office is open from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m so on days when I don’t work at my off-campus job until 5 p.m. I could run back to the office after my 1 o’clock class and get in another two hours.
But then I would work all morning, go to class, go back to work, then go to my other job all night.
While yes it’s possible, and I have done it, it’s exhausting. I mean that’s working over 10 hours a day. And while yes, I could use the money like any other college student, over exerting myself to the point where I stop finding my job fun isn’t worth.
Set limits with your job. Don’t give your job the absolute maximum hours you could work, because you may not be able to survive them. Instead, write out a sample weekly schedule with all your classes, events and proposed work schedule. Does it seem reasonable, or are you dreading it just writing it out?
If you’re already wanting to complain about the schedule you wrote down, then you are a little over ambitious. Consider lightening the hours you've proposed before you turn them in to a supervisor.
Get a Lenient Job
Time to share a secret…
I do a lot of homework at work. Like a lot. And almost all my blog writing and designing gets done at work, too. (This whole post was completed while at work).
How do you not get fired Caitlyn!?
Well my on-campus job is extremely extremely lenient with me doing homework and taking breaks. Mostly because I honestly don’t have too much work to do there, but also because it is an on-campus job and they understand how much work college is.
My off-campus job is somewhat lenient, but I’m certainly much busier there and can’t just pull out my notebook and start cracking on that week’s statistics homework. I can however, write and edit essays, find research for projects, and draft blog posts between helping patrons because I sit at a computer my whole shift.
So my tip to you is to find a job where you work at a computer.Because it’s life saving, and honestly if I solely worked at a job where I didn’t have access to the internet I would fail all my classes. Okay maybe that's a tad dramatic. I would just fail any class that has any sort of essay in the syllabus.
My secret is out, so now it's time for you to spill your's! How do you juggle school and work?

Dealing with Sleep Deprivation in College
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Sleep-Deprivation-in-Collegehttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Sleep-Deprivation-in-CollegeSun, 02 Apr 2017 12:30:00 +0000
If there’s one thing I’ve learned this semester it has nothing to do with integrals, spherical coordinates, accessor methods, or standard deviations. It’s that going to class with just a few hours of sleep is absolutely miserable.
I have 8 a.m.’s three days a week and work at 8 a.m. two to three times a week, so I’m up early almost every day. I don’t mind that. I love getting up early, I just don’t love getting up early after staying up past my 9:30 bedtime. (Which I don’t think I’ve even met since winter break to be honest).
I’ve slowed down a bit since spring break, and have been giving myself more rest and sleep, but the weeks before spring break I was totally overexerting myself. My typical weekly schedule looked something like this:
I was so dang tired all the time y’all. I was getting up between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. every day but not going to bed until at least midnight because I had homework to do, food to cook, a shower to be taken, friends to keep up with, blogs to write, and c̶u̶t̶e̶ ̶b̶o̶y̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶t̶a̶l̶k̶ ̶t̶o̶.
I don’t regret stretching myself so far. I’ve had my best semester so far here at college, and I attribute it to the fact that I’ve gotten out so much more instead of holing up in my dorm like I did every other semester. So while I would never do this to myself again, I know it happens to some college students and I want to help you!
I’m going to show you how to cope with the days, weeks, and months (because it happens) where you find yourself sleep deprived. Oh, and how to avoid it too, because that’s what I’ve learned this second half of the semester!
First, let’s start with how to deal when you do end up only getting a measly 5 hours of sleep - or less:
Eat good food
Also, just eat good food in general. Food is fuel, so if you’re not eating or eating like crap then you’re going to be dragging and not able to keep your eyes open.
Don’t fall into the trap of eating Taco Bell, Papa John’s and Steak & Shake everyday. Because you’ll feel extremely sluggish. There’s no problem with treating yourself when you really want it, just don’t do it everyday, especially not when you haven’t slept very well.
Instead, opt for fruits and veggies. Maybe a good smoothie or salad. Or if that’s too “healthy” for you, try opting for yogurt, nuts or even some chips and guac as a snack. It’s better for you than Doritos - or so I tell myself.
Also, don’t you dare skip breakfast!
Don’t go back to your room
I was just telling my friend the other day that my number one secret to not sleeping all day long is not going back to my room between classes. If I did, I’d be out and asleep in no time. Instead, I’ll hang out in the student union between classes, go read in my favorite spot on campus, go to the gym, or go to tutoring for statistics.
Just stay out of your room, and away from dead silent places. Instead, go somewhere with a good deal of people so the noise keeps you awake, and you aren’t tempted to take a cat nap that turns into you falling asleep for the day at 2pm.
Sweat it out
It may seem counter intuitive, but I attribute the energy and motivation I have to knock out some homework once I finally get back to my dorm 14 hours after leaving that morning to the fact that I hit the gym.
During the school week, I go the the gym about three times. On Monday’s, I’ll go right after my 8 a.m. calculus class, which is honestly one of the only reasons I wake up and can make it through that class. I wake up excited to hit the gym, so I have no temptation to hit snooze or skip class. Plus, then I don’t really have to get ready. Just throw on some spandex and a tank, eat a bowl of cereal and toss my hair up in a pony. That means I get to sleep for another 45 minutes or so since I don’t have to do my hair or make-up.
The other two times I go are Tuesday and Thursday after my evening class. Most times, I’m so exhausted that I don’t even want to make the five minute walk to the rec center, but I’m always glad I do. I’ve never not left the gym more hyped than when I arrived. I leave with the energy to run a 5k, which I channel into my statistics and calculus homework after hopping in the shower and throwing a veggie burger on the stove.
Now, the things I’ve learned this half of the semester: how to squeeze in those extra minutes of sleep and not be so tired throughout the day.
Keep those precious minutes of sleep
A month ago I was introduced to the magical creation that is the Sleep Cycle app.
I discovered this app while readingJasmin's blog. Basically, Sleep Cycle analyzes your sleeping patterns (awake, sleep, deep sleep) depending on how much noise your making in bed and then wakes you up when you're most awake during the 30 minute interval you preset. I was pretty skeptical of it at first, but now I use it every night!
I usually set it to wake me between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. It may seem like 30 minutes is a huge time gap, and how the heck is that supposed to help you sleep more? Well because it has a lovely little snooze feature!
Let's say the alarm goes off at 6:33 a.m. I pick up my phone and when the screen wakes up the sounds turns off. Then when I see it's too early to get up, I just set my phone back down and the app waits until I'm "awake" again to go off again. Gone are the days of hearing your alarm, tapping XXX to end it, and then falling back asleep. The only way you turn off the alarm is to swipe on the screen, and then a graph will pop up showing you your sleep for that night. How cool, right? I always love looking at analytics like that.
Don’t drink coffee after noon
Do not drink that coffee after lunch y’all. Just don’t do it. It’s bad and it screws with your sleep schedule more than you would think. Unless you’re really planning on staying up for hours past your bedtime (which I don’t recommend), put the cup down and pick up some water and eat a snack instead.
This is something I’ve been doing as long as I can remember. Like I’m talking elementary school. So if that doesn’t attest to how helpful this is, then I’m not sure what will.
And funny story: of course the one time I was too lazy to lay out clothes the night before I woke up 13 minutes before class started! I was running around my room jumping in and out of clothes like those crazy scenes in movies. But don’t worry, I made it to class on time!
So save yourself the stress and time in the morning and just lay out some clothes the night before.
Boys aren’t worth losing sleep over
Okay let’s get real for a hot minute.
College is a time for meeting new people and staying out late and having fun. BUT, that doesn’t mean you should let anything get in the way of your college success or your health.
Yes, you may really like this boy (or girl, whichever team you bat for) but do you really need to stay up until 2 a.m. texting them about random nothing? Or just staying awake hoping they text you back?
Put yourself first and get some rest. Your good night’s sleep and education should come before any boy who you’re not even fully confident likes you. So tell him goodnight and get some beauty sleep.
How do you survive on little to no sleep?

What I Learned From Three Weeks without Coffee
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/no-coffee-3Weekshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/no-coffee-3WeeksSun, 26 Mar 2017 12:30:00 +0000
My love for coffee has slowly grown to the point that I can even drink black coffee now! But now I can’t even drink those sweet lattes from Starbucks anymore. Too much sugar!
This semester I have my own coffeemaker and a crap ton of meal plan money to waste on the Starbucks on campus, so my coffee obsession (I refuse to say addiction!) has sort of sky rocketed.
However, I started to notice some negative impacts from my daily Starbucks runs.
Starbucks gave me stomach problems
One of the biggest being insane stomach aches, cramps and bloating. I’ve had stomach issues a lot in the past, so I didn’t think anything big of at first. Honestly, I thought maybe I was just wearing too tight of pants or something, but that proved wrong when the worst stomach ache hit me while I was at work in my comfy slacks. The whole time I was dying at work, trying not to throw up or curl into a ball I made a connection: every day I had gotten the cramps I had also gotten Starbucks.
So I decided to take a break from my beloved.
It’s been just a little over three weeks without buying a drink from Starbucks and I’ve had one little stomach episode, but it was about one thousandth of the pain of what they had been three weeks ago.
Now I’m not sure exactly what was causing my stomach cramps and nausea spells, but I it was something to do with only Starbucks coffee specifically. I know this because I was able to make my own coffee and actually enjoy it. No stomach cramps from that!
And it definitely wasn’t coming from an overload of caffeine either like I thought, because when I made my own coffee I made about 24 oz, which is the same as the iced venti I usually get!
So I’m thinking the root of my stomach issues was coming from the coconut milk or just Starbucks coffee blend in general. I honestly have no idea, but I do know that I can drink their decaf coffee with no issue so I’ll probably just have to stick to that for now.
I was (almost) addicted
Purposely not drinking coffee made me realize how much I’ve depended on it the first half of this semester.
With 8 a.m.'s every day and then working until 9 p.m. at least three nights during the week I get super exhausted. I even have time set aside for a nap every Tuesday and Thursday, but lately I’ve been having to fill that time with group projects, homework, and school appointments. Hence my major upsurge in coffee consumption.
Not being able to drink it these past three weeks has be weird because I’m so used to just grabbing a cup when I’m tired. Or when I just want something bitter, because honestly my main reason for drinking coffee is for the taste. I just use the excuse that I’m tired to justify it.
Stepping back and giving myself a break from caffeine has been great, because it made me focus on getting more sleep and being productive without a the need of a sudden energy surge!
I’m going to be more picky about when I drink coffee now, or at least caffeinated coffee, since I was mostly only drinking it for the taste and feeling of sophistication.
I think for now I’m going to stick to buying decaf when I do have the craving for coffee, and leave the caffeinated stuff for when I make my own or just wasn’t able to get enough sleep.
But I will never justify staying up late by telling myself, “Who cares if you’ll be tired, you can just get coffee!”
Sleep over caffeine
The number one rule I took out of this little hiatus is to always always choose sleep over coffee. (Or energy drinks, whatever your poison is).
While yes, you could survive on six hours, or less, of sleep a night and a good old Starbucks venti, but that’s no way to live. You aren’t really awake, you’re just cruising through life barely keeping your eyes open! Trust me, if anyone should know it’s me!
These past three weeks without coffee I’ve been able to pay attention in my classes a lot easier and have had better memory retention! Boo-yah!
So don’t kid yourself into thinking you can survive without sleep. Because you can’t, and one day it’s going to come back to haunt you when you fall asleep in class or at your work desk.
Why do you drink coffee? Could you survive three weeks without caffeine? Let me know in the comments below!

How to Have Gorgeous Hair Even When it hasn't been Washed in Days
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Gorgeous-Hairhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Gorgeous-HairSun, 19 Mar 2017 12:30:00 +0000
The day I’m typing this out is a rare day in history because at this moment I currently have freshly washed hair. Well, if you count last night as freshly washed.
A question I always get asked when I go home or visit any family member is when the last time I washed my hair was, because they like to make fun of me and my tendency to only wash my hair once or twice a week. But the thing is, most of the time people would have no idea had I recently washed my hair or not.
I’ve hardly ever had anyone tell me my hair looked like it needed washed, and it was only after they were running their hands through my hair and felt how greasy it was. Had they of not touched my hair, they would have never known! Honestly, the amount of times I’ve been asked if I dyed my hair or gotten lowlights just because I haven’t washed my hair in a few days is insane. (And kind of annoying because that implies people think I’m a brunette, but I’m a proud blonde!)
So what’s my secret? How do I go upwards of three days without shampooing and conditioning without looking like I have a drowned rat living on my head?
Dry shampoo is my saving grace
I’ve tried three different brands of dry shampoo, and while each one has it’s benefits, I definitely do have a favorite.
The first dry shampoo I ever tried was Not Your Mother’s because it was the cheapest. I used it for a couple months before I realized that I started to get dandruff from it! So I had to stop using my beloved dry shampoo and actually wash and condition my scalp before I could go back to skipping multiple days between washes. So much effort.
When I got my scalp healthy again I finished up the bottle, so as not to waste it and I didn’t have the same issue so I repurchased it only to get dandruff again. So I don’t think I’ll ever be buying this product again. No matter how cheap it is.
The next brand I tried was Batiste. Now, Batiste is a little more pricey than other brands because it’s known as the “#1 Dry Shampoo.” Or at least it says so on the bottles.
The cool thing about Batiste is that they sell scented and colored dry shampoo! So you want your hair to smell like flowers, cherry, pomegranate, or vanilla? Well they got you covered! Don’t like the white residue dry shampoo can leave in your hair? Well Batiste has dry shampoo specifically for blondes, light brunettes and dark brunettes.
I loved loved loved the scented options, but I just didn’t think it actually did a good job of keeping the oil at bay.
Right now, I’m currently using Aussie’s dry shampoo and I’m loving it! I actually need to go get a new bottle of it soon. It doesn’t have an amazing fragrance like Batiste does, but it does a way better job at keeping my hair nice and fresh.
Products you need in your shower
Now, just because I'm only washing my hair once or twice a week doesn't mean I'm only showering once or twice a week.
But Caitlyn, how do you keep your hair dry then?
With my handy dandy shower cap of course! I used to just throw my hair up in a bun and avoid the water as much as possible, but the edges and ends would always end up damp still. Enter the shower cap I got for Christmas and the problem was quickly solved!
One other thing you definitely need to be using in the shower is a deep conditioner. Since you won't be washing your hair every day, you also won't be conditioning it everyday, so it can get dry really easily. To counteract this, you have to make sure you're using a deep conditioner every time you wash your hair! And make sure you let it sit in your hair a couple minutes and don't just rinse it out right away.
You have to experiment
If you’re looking to go past the two day mark, you’re going to have to come to terms with the fact that you are probably not going to be able to wear your hair down.
Unless your hair is highly accustomed to going four or more days between washes, your roots are going to get oily on day two. Sorry girl. But don’t worry, because there’s ways to conceal that!
You could just throw your hair up in a pony (my go-to), braid it, make a little pouf (or a big one if that’s your style), pin back your “bangs,” or throw it in a bun. So many options! There’s even more when you find out the different ways you can pin back your bangs (twisted, braided, or faux braided) and add half buns and ponies and double braids into the mix!
Not washing my hair every day is one of the reasons I got so good at braids! I taught myself how to fishtail braid, french braid, dutch braid, and even french fishtail braid! (Is there a real name for that?)
Tip for my short haired girls: my hair isn't long enough to braid it like that anymore, so I'll french braid it back, then end it in a bun at the nape of my neck.
Curled hair works better longer
One of the things I’ve picked up on over the years is that hair that has been curled will look “fresher” longer without any extra work.
I think this is because if you tightly curl your hair on day one, it will take a few days for it to fall, giving you waves to wear for the next couple days! How awesome is it? Curly hair is always great for nasty weather because if it gets wet poufy it will just had more texture to your hairstyle!
This was a picture I posted on Instagram a couple months ago and so many people complimented my hair! And these were two days curls!
Also, curled hair (in my opinion) works better for updos. Especially buns!
It takes time
Five years ago I still washed my hair literally every day. I grew up being taught that I had to wash my hair everyday. I’m not sure what changed, but eventually me (and my mother and sister) started washing our hair only every other day. And that seemed like the norm when I talked to my friends, so that’s what I stuck with.
Eventually, I started going three days before I washed my hair again. It was so long ago that I can’t remember why, but if I had to guess it would have been because of one of three reasons: 1) I was too lazy to wash it because I used to have long-ish hair, 2) I didn’t want to wash it because then I would have to take the time to actually do my hair the next morning, or 3) I wanted to wait to wash it so it looked bomb af the day after next for the outfit I had planned that day.
At first, my hair would get so oily and dry at the same time that all day I was itching to take a shower and I couldn’t concentrate on anything else. Sound familiar?I promise you, your hair will soon realize what you’re doing and stop producing so much oil.
The reason it’s producing so much now is because it’s grown accustomed you stripped all the oil out of it every day or two, so it’s used to pouring out a whole head of oil every new day. Honestly, your hair doesn’t need that much oil.
One of my best friend’s sisters is hair stylist and she once went a whole month without washing her hair! I don’t know whether to shout #GOALS or to say, “Eh, maybe that’s taking it a bit too far.”
How often do you wash your hair? Would you want to see blog posts about the specific hair-dos I do after day one? Let me know in the comments below!

Must Reads and Let Downs: so far in 2017

https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Must-Reads-Let-Downs-2017http://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Must-Reads-Let-Downs-2017Sun, 12 Mar 2017 12:30:00 +0000
It was part of my yearly goals andsemester goalsto read more books this year and it's started off great! I've already got four (and a half) books read, which means I already met my semester goal of three!
Nothing like working at a library to spark your desire to read right? Yes, I got a new job. Which means I work two jobs now. That's not what this post is about though, but watch out for a new post on balancing two jobs and college soon!
Today I've got three let downs and one must read for you. I'm not going to tell you which is which until the end, though! That way you still read the description of each book to decide whether it's a good fit foryou!
Or maybe it's just me being evil and making you read a little extra. Muahah!
A Whole New World
I was so excited to start this book because I love historical(-ish) books and Disney!! Plus, Aladdin and Jasmine are two of my favorite Disney characters. I always wanted to be Jasmine when I was younger because I loved her outfit the most. Forget princess dresses! And Aladdin is my second biggest Disney prince crush.
One of the things I loved most about the book was how the author the furthered the character developments. I thought this was great because even though we do know who the characters are, I certainly didn’t know everything about them. Like who Aladdin’s mom was! Plus, the book made Aladdin seem even more hot and dreamy. (Someone had to say it.)
However, the plot fell a little short of my liking. The book was basically the same as the second part of the movie when Jafar stole the lamp from Aladdin, so it really wasn't too different from the movie, like I thought it would be.
Still a good read and worth the time! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Description from GoodReads:
“Welcome to a new YA series that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. Each book asks the question: What if one key moment from a familiar Disney film was changed? This dark and daring version of Aladdin twists the original story with the question: What if Jafar was the first one to summon the Genie?
When Jafar steals the Genie’s lamp, he uses his first two wishes to become sultan and the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Agrabah lives in fear, waiting for his third and final wish.To stop the power-mad ruler, Aladdin and the deposed Princess Jasmine must unite the people of Agrabah in rebellion. But soon their fight for freedom threatens to tear the kingdom apart in a costly civil war.
What happens next? A Street Rat becomes a leader. A princess becomes a revolutionary. And readers will never look at the story of Aladdin in the same way again.”
Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls
This book had been on a reading list for almost a year, so I had very high expectations for this book. Sadly, they were not met.
The book was a little all over the place, and highly unrealistic at times. Or maybe I’m just too naive to believe the things that happen in this book are actually possible by kids my age. Who knows? Also, the chapters told from Delia’s POV were so vague and didn’t seem like real writing to me. It was just words tumbling all over the place that made no sense, so I always rushed through those chapters. Good thing they were always extremely short.
The ending also really confused me. Like I had no idea what happened, so I looked up reviews to see what other readers thought and there are so many different theories. I guess the author wanted to leave it up to the reader to decide.
There were some good things about the book though. There were quite a few quotes and passages that I highly related to or had to sticky note because I loved them so much. I also really enjoyed how the characters seemed very realistic and not just people on paper.
Description from Amazon:
“They say Delia burned herself to death in her stepfather’s shed. They say it was suicide.
But June doesn’t believe it.
June and Delia used to be closer than anything. Best friends in that way that comes before everyone else—before guys, before family. It was like being in love, but more. They had a billion secrets, binding them together like thin silk cords.
But one night a year ago, everything changed. June, Delia, and June’s boyfriend Ryan were just having a little fun. Their good time got out of hand. And in the cold blue light of morning, June knew only this—things would never be the same again.
And now, a year later, Delia is dead. June is certain she was murdered. And she owes it to her to find out the truth…which is far more complicated than she ever could have imagined.”
The Merciless II
After finishing thefirst book in the series, I couldn't wait to read this one! But to be honest, it was quite a let down.
What I loved about the first book was how out of the box and real it was, but the sequel didn’t have that same feel. It seemed too cliche and not as thought-out as the first book. There was still tons of wicked imagery and insane events though. Plus, Jude has such a great backstory and realistic personality that it makes the book still worth a read.
This installment may have been a let down, but I’m still hype for the third book that comes out this summer!
Description from GoodReads:
“Sofia is still processing the horrific truth of what happened when she and three friends performed an exorcism that spiraled horribly out of control. Ever since that night, Sofia has been haunted by bloody and demonic visions. Her therapist says they’re all in her head, but to Sofia they feel chillingly real. She just wants to get out of town, start fresh someplace else . . . until her mother dies suddenly, and Sofia gets her wish.
Sofia is sent to St. Mary’s, a creepy Catholic boarding school in Mississippi. There, seemingly everyone is doing penance for something, most of all the mysterious Jude, for whom Sofia can’t help feeling an unshakeable attraction. But when Sofia and Jude confide in each other about their pasts, something flips in him. He becomes convinced that Sofia is possessed by the devil. . . . Is an exorcism the only way to save her eternal soul?”
One Was Lost
I go in and out of loving thrillers, and this one came along just when I needed it.
I picked this book up on a whim when I was perusing Target’s book section (always a bad idea - well bad for my bank account but good for my soul) and I have no regrets.
I think the best part about this book is that it’s about a hiking trip, and I’ve been absolutely dying to go hiking again. Okay, maybe I shouldn’t use that terminology in reference to this book.
Anyways, another awesome thing I loved about this book was trying to figure out who is hunting the kids. The author throws so many different people it could be at you and my guess was way wrong. And I’m usually pretty good at predicting those sorts of things!
One thing I didn’t like about the main character Sera, is how she keeps referring to herself as her mother and how she needs to stay away from boys because “giving in” to your feelings towards them is bad. It’s so annoying how much she whines about it and I personally don’t agree with that viewpoint.
Description from GoodReads:
“Damaged. Deceptive. Dangerous. Darling. Are they labels or a warning? The answer could cost Sera everything.
Murder, justice, and revenge were so not a part of the plan when Sera set out on her senior camping trip. After all, hiking through the woods is supposed to be safe and uneventful.
Then one morning the group wakes up groggy, confused, and with words scrawled on their wrists: Damaged. Deceptive. Dangerous. Darling. Their supplies? Destroyed. Half their group? Gone. Their chaperone? Unconscious. Worst of all, they find four dolls acting out a murder—dolls dressed just like them.
Suddenly it's clear; they're being hunted. And with the only positive word on her wrist, Sera falls under suspicion…”
Have you guessed which one is the must read?*cough*The last one*cough*
Which book would you want to read? And what have you been reading lately? Let me know in the comments below!

Why I Refuse to go Greek

https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/03/05/Why-I-Refuse-to-go-Greekhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/03/05/Why-I-Refuse-to-go-GreekSun, 05 Mar 2017 13:30:00 +0000
I’m what members of sororities and fraternities call a GDI: a goddamn independent.
Harsh but I kind of like the title because it makes me feel powerful for choosing to remain independent. Also, apparently I’m the “Vice President” of the GDI’s. A boy who used to be in a fraternity considers himself the President and he has other people standing as Standards and Recruitment and appointed me VP when he heard I’m a GDI whose best friend is in a sorority. Sadly, I don’t think it's a position I can add to my resume or email signature.
So why don’t I join a sorority? First off, I can’t even spell it, so shoutout to spell check for helping a girl out.
But besides that I actually have quite a few legitimate reasons for choosing to remain independent of Greek affiliation. By legitimate I mean reasons that don’t include, “They’re dumb and stupid and just party.”
It just doesn’t fit my personality
I’m not the kind of girl who likes to be around a lot of other girls all the time. Actually, I’m not the kind of person who likes to be around a lot of people in general. Which explains why downtown areas give me anxiety.
All of my friends here at school (literally not joking - ALL of them) are affiliated, so I once asked all of them what sorority I would be in if I had gone through recruitment. They all thought for a couple minutes and came up blank. They couldn’t see me in any sorority on campus, and if that’s not a sign that I shouldn’t join then I don’t know what is.
Quick note: I do know some people who are are socially anxious or introverted that joined a sororities and completed blossomed. It’s a case by case basis, so what I’m trying to say is don’t let this one reason keep you from rushing.
I don’t want to pay for it
If you didn’t know, it costs money to be in a Greek organization. And it’s not cheap. Now I know there are payment plans and such that you can work out with your sorority, but I just don’t see the point of paying to be in an organization? I mean I can make friends and volunteer without paying for either?
Also, I just learned this last semester, but you have to pay just to rush, too! I found out because I actually thought about going through recruitment just to see what sororities I would get bids from (and then turn them down of course), but then my good friend informed me it cost $50! Like what? No thank you. Maybe if it was $10.
Maybe.
I don’t want a lot of “kinda” friends
When one of my friends joined a sorority freshman year, I remember her saying how immediately her Facebook started blowing up with friend requests. So yeah, that thing about how joining a Greek organization is one of the fastest ways to make friends is true, but that doesn't mean they’re all real friends.
I mean you’re not actual friends friends with all your Facebook friends are you?
Plus, since you are forced to be around these girls a lot for events and meetings and such, you either become friends or you’re stuck in this sort of limbo between “I have no idea who you are” and “I’m friends with her!” Which is when “kinda” friends are born.
Personally, I like to have a cap on my amount of “kinda” friends. I don’t like being around people who aren’t my friends, or who I know won’t be a good friend of mine. And that seems to be difficult to control when in a sorority.
I like to make things difficult
Bouncing off that last point, I really like to make things difficult for myself. (Just ask anyone who knows me and they could spout off at least five people on the spot). And one thing I find really difficult is making friends. So when I came to a college where I knew absolutely no one, I wanted to challenge myself to really make friends and not just have them handed to me wrapped in Greek letters.
So that’s why you won’t ever see me joining a sorority. But just because I don’t want to join one, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t join one!
I want to make this absolutely clear: I’m not hating on Greek organizations. I’ve seen them completely open up girls who were falling apart and help people figure out who they are. Plus, they stand for some pretty dang causes and charities, and I love that! I just can’t stand the setup of how they’re run, which has to do with who I am as a person. Meaning, what’s stopping me from joining may be way you’re dying to go through recruitment! So do it!
Basically, don’t let me and my story stop you from going Greek if that’s what you want to do.
Any other GDI's out there? What held you back from going through recruitment? Or are you affiliated? If so, with what sorority and what made you join?

How to Write a Brilliant Cover Letter
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Write-Cover-Letterhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Write-Cover-LetterSun, 26 Feb 2017 12:00:00 +0000
I had no idea what a cover letter was until about a month into my first semester of college. when I went to apply to be an orientation leader. Then I was scrambling trying to figure out what it was to met the application deadline. Oops.
I want to save you the trouble of Googling the crap out of "how to write a cover letter," and sorting through the thousands of articles that pop up so today I'm breaking it down fast and simple for you!
If you aren’t sure what a cover letter is, it’s basically a letter to a company that you send along with your resume. Usually it’s read first, hence the term “cover” letter. Since it is the first thing companies read, it’s important to make sure your letter stands out and makes the employer want to look at your resume.
Cover letters are super simple to write, I promise. They follow a simple three or four paragraph format, which I’m going to break down for you right now! (Stay until the end and I’ll even share a cover letter template with you!)
Header
First off, you need to include your address in the top left hand corner of the letter. This is important because it allows the employer to know whether you live close to the job you are applying for. It also allows them a way to contact you (should your email or phone just decide to stop working randomly).
Directly beneath your address, type out the date that you plan on sending/delivering your cover letter.
Leaving two lines of space after the date, you can also include the address of the employer. However, this is usually only done if you know the specific person to whom the letter will be addressed.
If you are applying for a job on campus, and you live on campus, I would use your dorm address rather than your actual permanent address. That way the employer knows you live as close as possible, and therefore will find it easier to get to work.
Addressing the Letter
Of course, if you know the name of who the cover letter is going to then put their name here, but most of the time you aren’t going to know exactly who you’re writing to. This means you’ll more than likely be using a generic title to address the letter. I usually use “Hiring Manager” unless the job description says otherwise. Another popular title is “Human Resources Manager.” Just never use “To Whom This May Concern.” That’s too informal and groups you with the rest of the people applying - which is what you’re trying to avoid.
Also, instead of using a comma like you would in a letter to a friend, you want to put a colon. Like so:
Intro Paragraph
In this paragraph you want to share your interest for the job, along with what that job position is, as well as how you heard about that position. This should only take you two to three sentences.
Pretty simple right?
Body Paragraphs
Now comes the juicy part of the letter.
These next one or two paragraphs are where you really want to draw the reader in and show how qualified for the job you are. To do so, you should draw from your resume and elaborate on a specific skill or past job to highlight your competence in the field you are applying for.
This can be a tad bit difficult when you are applying for a job no where near anything you’ve done before. But don’t fear! There are ways to still have something of substance to talk about in your cover letter.
For example:
Here I'm not drawing on actual experiences of mine, but my passions in life that relate to the job I'm applying for. It shows the employer how much you want the job and how hard you'll be willing to work to get hired and keep the position.
Closing Paragraph
This is your last chance to make an impression, but like the intro paragraph it’s super concise! Be sure to nail into them that you’re really interested in the position! (Even if you have to say just that!) Then, you want to provide your preferred method of contact (usually email) and thank them for taking the time to read your letter.
Signature
Last but not least, you gotta leave that John Hancock so they don’t forget whose amazing cover letter they just read! Now remember, now is not the time to get all buddy buddy or clever, so stick with the usual sign off of “sincerely” and you’ll do great! Just be sure to leave two lines then type your name. The space is there for a real signature, should you have to print the cover letter out to hand over in person. You could also create a digital signature, but I just haven’t gotten around to that yet!
And now you’re done! How simple was that?
Cover Letter Impact
Considering how little time writing cover letters take, it’s amazing the impact they can have on your chance at getting your dream job. I mean think about it, if you were the hiring manager of a company, who would you rather consider for employment: the person who just submitted a resume or the person who submitted a cover letter tailored to the position and their resume? (The correct answer is the second option.)
I’ve got some real world experience to back this up too. I’ve applied to a lot of jobs in the past couple of months, but I really only ever heard back from employers to whom I had submitted a cover letter as well as a resume. Even though nine times out of ten, they didn’t even ask for one. I swear they’re the main reason I get called into interviews.
Taking the initiative, and time, to craft a perfectly written cover letter shows the hiring manager how dedicated you are to get that position.
If you’ve made it this far you’re probably like, “Okay Caitlyn, where’s that free template and sample letter you promised me?” Well wait no longer because you’ve just hit the jackpot!
Just click the image above to download your template now and start writing some brilliant cover letters of your own! (It pays to stay until the end, am I right?)

Why I Refuse to Delete Old Pictures
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Delete-Old-Pictureshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Delete-Old-PicturesSun, 19 Feb 2017 19:25:34 +0000
I have these “rules” that I created for social media. Like not consciously, but one day I just found myself telling myself I could or couldn’t do things and I’ve just always followed those rules. For example, I only like a tweet if I have a reason to want to go back and look at it one day, maybe it was funny or maybe it made me happy. I never like tweet that I “like” but don’t have a reason to go back and look at again. Other rules I follow are never using a solo quote as an Instagram caption, never subtweeting, and never deleting old pictures.
With my sister being a middle schooler, I’m pretty in tune with how they interact socially and use social media. There are a lot of things about this next generation that I don’t like (mirror selfies with the flash on so you can’t even see anything. Like really?), but one that really bothers me is the fact that they delete pictures off their Instagrams all the time.
I never delete old pictures. Not off my phone, not off Twitter, not off Instagram and not off Facebook. No matter how embarrassing they are, and trust me, there are some really embarrassing ones.
Why would I torture myself like that?
First off, I don’t see it as torture. I’m a visual person, and I love documenting my life through pictures. I love being able to look back and remember how I was feeling and what happened on the day I took a photo. Which is why I have thousands of pictures on my phone, my laptop, and tucked away in photo albums. I’m that girl who’s always saying, "We need to take picture!”
That doesn’t mean I love every picture I’ve ever posted online. (That’s hilarious.) I’m just too stubborn to delete them.
Sure, some of my old Instagram pictures are nowhere near something I would post now, but how cool is it to see how much I’ve changed?
I just went through almost my whole feed the other day and the thing that I kept asking myself was, “Why the heck did I edit that photo like that?!” I also questioned why I loved taking pictures of oatmeal so much. But I’m not going to delete any of them just because I don’t like them now. Also, shoutout to when I used to collage pictures together all the time.
I guess you could say I’m a hoarder of pictures, but I really can’t bring myself to let go. I just love having something to look back on. Even if it’s badly composed and edited pictures that literally anyone could see.
Another reason I won’t delete them, is because they give my confidence. Yes, those dorky middle school pictures I posted on my Facebook for absolutely no reason give my confidence. (I literally have an album titled "Swinging at the Park.") Because if I’m brave enough to leave them up, then I’m strong enough to not feel offended if anyone says anything about them. Not that anyone ever has.
Plus, like I said, I love going back through them. I had no self-confidence in middle school and I honestly didn’t think I was anywhere near pretty, but going through all my old albums on Facebook the other day made me realize different. I literally thought to myself, “How did I ever think I was ugly?” How far I’ve come, right?
One more thing, a lot of people recommend you comb through your social media feeds and clean them out for future employers, but I don’t fully agree with this. While yes, you absolutely should not be posting anything illegal (um, duh) or malicious, I don’t think you need to delete your whole past. People know you created your account when you were really young, so they can't expect everything you’ve ever posted to be professional and mature. That’s just unfair.
Do you delete old pictures off your social media accounts? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments below!

What it's Really Like to be Single in College
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/02/11/Single-in-Collegehttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/02/11/Single-in-CollegeSun, 12 Feb 2017 17:10:21 +0000
I think college students, us girls especially, focus on how single we are around the new year (New Year’s kiss anyone?) and the dreaded Valentine’s day. Or Single’s Awareness day as some satirists dubbed it.
Don’t get me wrong, the idea of Valentine’s day is great! It’s always nice to show the person you love how much they mean to you, but it also makes people who aren’t romantically involved (*cough cough*) feel the tiniest bit crappy. Okay, maybe really crappy.
There’s always those movements around this time of year to forget about needing a partner and celebrate yourself (which yas, you do that!), but it can be hard when you actually want to be in a relationship. Like yes, I love myself and I know I don’t need a man to complete me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want one. Like I said in arecent post, I’m a relationship person down to my core, so I’m always on the prowl -- I mean, trying to meet as many new boys as possible.
And dear Lord have there been some super awkward and uncomfortable situations. I could write a whole book about all of the embarrassing things that have happened to me just in college alone that involve boys.
People don’t really tell you what it’s like to be single in college, especially not when you’re looking for more than just a casual thing, so today I’m going to give you some amusement and share, from my experience, what it’s really like to be single in college.
You’re going to complain about being single
Like a lot.
Sometimes it'll be genuine complaining, but most of the time it'll be comedic complaints."I haven't washed my hair in four days, no wonder I'm single!"
I honestly think the best thing about being single is complaining about being single. I have a shirt that says “Single all the way” and it’s legit one of my favorite shirts. It’s just fun to make fun of yourself sometimes. Plus, then it lets all the cute boys know I'm available. Like, hey what's up hello!
That’s a double win in my book.
You get closer to your friends
One great thing about being single in college, is that then you get to spend more time with your best friends. I mean, obviously you can still hang out with them even if you are in a relationship, but from what I’ve noticed, girls in relationships spend a lot less time with their friends than single girls do.
And one of the best girl talk subjects has got to be cute boys. Like you can never go wrong with a conversation about that. Also, you know you're finally "real" friends with someone if you talk about cute guys, like that's just a rule.
People start to think you're dating your best friend
I mean, are you really best friends if no one has questioned your sexuality?
For some reason, people like to jump to the conclusion that you're actually anything but straight if you haven't been in a relationship for a long time. (I'm sorry I can't find a nice boy willing to date me okay?) But the suspicions get even greater when you and your bestie start doing literally everything together and cuddling when other people are around and calling each other babe and saying, "I love you." And then you constantly have to tell people that no, you actually aren't dating.
However, this trick does come in handy when boys who can't take a hint keep trying to hit you up. "Sorry, I actually have a girlfriend."
You get closer to yourself
I wouldn’t say you’re lonely in college if you’re single, because that’s not true, but you certainly do spend more time alone - even if you do have a ton of friends. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with spending some time to yourself.
Spending more time alone is something I believe to be extremely vital and beneficial, especially during college. College is a time of growing up, becoming a real adult, and figuring out what you want in your life. Which personally, I think is a lot easier to do if you’re unattached to anyone.
Okay, maybe you don’t actually go on a date with anyone from the dating app/website, but almost every single girl I know has made an account on one and at least looked at potential baes. I mean when you’re that single, looking at a basically unlimited amount of cute boys is a pretty dang tempting option.
I’ve also known girls who don’t download apps like Tinder or Bumble themselves, but they’ll watch their friends swipe left and right and get sad when a boy they thought was hot get a left swipe. (#guilty)
You’re going to lie about having a boyfriend at some point
There never fails to be those brave souls of boys who will ask you out when you just reallyreallyaren’t interested.
Story time:Just last semester I was eating alone in the dining hall when a very awkward (but sweet, I’ll give him that) boy came up to me and started making conversation. And then out of nowhere asked me out. I blurted out “I have a boyfriend,” and sped away as fast as I could. And I wasn’t even finished eating yet, gosh dang it.
Like props to the kid for having the guts to do it, it made me feel pretty cool that someone would want to ask me out, but you were just not my type.
I want to hear your most awkward college boy experience ever! Leave it in the comments below so we can bond over our embarrassing lives!

Seven Perks of Taking 8 a.m. Classes
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Perks-8-ams/Perks-8-amshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Perks-8-ams/Perks-8-amsSun, 05 Feb 2017 14:25:21 +0000
Today we're going to talk about something extremely radical: 8 a.m. college classes.
Now, most college students (like yourself if you're reading this) think 8 a.m. classes were created by Satan himself, but me? I love them.
I've always been a morning person, and many of the reasons why overlap with why I love taking 8 a.m.'s, and why you should too!
1. Sunrises
If you follow me onInstathen you probs know how avid of sunset enthusiast I am, but I’m also a sunrise lover too. One of my bigger motivators to make sure I don’t hit snooze on my alarm is so that I can see the sunset before class. If I get lucky, I’ll even get to watch it while walking to class instead of having to keep peeking out my dorm window every couple minutes to make sure I don’t miss anything exciting.
2. Being done with classes early
I do have to say that my favorite thing about having such early classes is that then I feel like I have more free time in the day. It took me a while to figure out why this was, but then I realized it’s because nothing is hanging over my head that I have to worry about doing later (ie. going to more classes) and because the earlier you wake up the more of the day you have to live. Like they say, wake up an hour earlier to live an hour more.
To kind of piggyback off that last one, since you don’t have any classes at night, you’ll (most likely) have nothing keeping you from watching your favorite tv programs! This is really important for me and one of my friends because we watch Dancing with the Stars together every Monday night when it’s on.
Last semester she accidentally scheduled a class in the middle of the show so sometimes she left early if they didn’t get let out early. Save yourself the trouble, and try to take the class earlier in the day. Plus, who wants to be in class after 4 pm anyways?
4. You’ll be a less judged for drinking coffee
So you know how drinking coffee is a basic thing to do, and therefore gets made fun of? Or you just get teased because people think you have an addiction? Well, something about college makes basic girls out of all of us doesn’t it? But if you’re waking up early then people seem to judge less about the amount of coffee you drink. Not that I care if you think I drink too much coffee anyways. I don’t.
5. You’ll actually feel less tired
To get a tad bit sciency for a moment (this never happens), it’s been shown in multiple studies that by waking up early continually that you’ll feel less tired throughout the day. Of course, this also assumes that you go to sleep at a decent hour (no, past midnight is not a decent hour).
I agree with this assertion because last semester I would wake up between 9 and 11 every day and I was so tired all the time, and I couldn’t figure out why for the life of me! Then this semester started, and my alarms through the week only range from 6:00 a.m. and 6:45 a.m., and somehow I manage to feel more energized, even on my long days when I have class from 8:00 to 5:45! And I don’t even get 7 hours of sleep every night!
Science is strange.
6. You get quiet reflection time
One thing that I’ve been trying to get into is meditation. I know it sounds a bit hippy and out there, but bear with me here. Meditation’s focus is to just center your focus on the here and now, and to clear your racing mind. This is especially useful in the morning, because it will help you destress before your day even begins and allow you to start it in a great mood.
Plus, it’s a lot easier to do in the early morning because that time of day is associated with peace and quiet. And you'll be forced to be quiet as well since your roommate will still be snoring.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t love large classes. I’m not about anything over 40 students, and less than 20 is the jackpot in my book. If you’re like this too, you should consider taking 8 a.m. classes. Why? Because of their dreaded reputation, most sane college students tend to avoid them like the plague, making the early morning classes less full! Jackpot! Who’s the sane one now?
Have you ever taken an 8 a.m.? How did you feel about it? Would you ever take another one? Let me know in the comments below!

Five Ways to Stay Close to Friends at Different Schools
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Friends-at-Different-Schoolshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/Friends-at-Different-SchoolsSun, 29 Jan 2017 13:00:00 +0000
The list of friends I have of who live in different states is starting to get a little too insane.
I’ve always had one or two friends that went to different schools, but as I went into high school and then on to college, the amount of my friends who lived far away from me grew exponentially.
Since I’ve had years to find ways to stay close and not fall out of touch with my besties, I have quite a few techniques up my sleeves.
Talk on the Phone
I’m just going to skip over the most obvious way (texting) and go straight to the second most obvious: calling them!
I’m really not a fan of texting, especially not when the person I’m texting is in a different time zone. It makes communicating in real time extremely difficult since you’ll both be doing two totally different things and may have to wait hours for a response. For example, I’m three hours ahead of a lot of my friends, so when I wake up it’s around 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. my time, which means it’s only 3:00 to 6:00 a.m. their time. Basically there’s no way they’re awake yet.
If you try to have a conversation with someone this way, then it may take an hour or two or three to have a conversation that would only like five to ten minutes on the phone. And I know we all have five or ten minutes in our day that we could spare to call a friend.
However, there’s still the issue as to if they don’t pick up, which would have made calling about as effective as texting them, but I’d much rather find a surprise voice mail from a friend than a random text. Sometimes though, I like to spam my friends with tons of text messages at times when I know they can’t get to the phone, so they have something to read and laugh at when they get the time.
Video chat
Now this presents the same issue of having to find a time that works for both of you, but I think it’s 100 percent worth it because seeing someone’s face and their surroundings makes it feel like you’re actually together.
My two preferred ways of video chatting are FaceTime andRabbit.
I can only imagine how confused you must be right now. No, that’s not a typo nor am I referring to a real rabbit.
Rabbit is an online video chatting application that allows you to share screens with those in your “room” with you! Basically, you can stream Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, and Amazon video together or just browse the Internet.
Just two days ago I was Rabbiting with my friend Emma who lives 2,200 miles away from me. We started American Horror Story together back in high school, and now we can still watch it together even though we lives states away. Plus, we can see each other while watching it so we can see and hear each other's reactions! We can also chat, but I had the feature disabled during this photo.
Rabbit can be a best testy sometimes, because it only launched back in 2013.The trouble you might have makes for great fun and problem solving with your friend, and nothing beats being able to watch you and your friend’s show together even though you’re actually miles apart.
You can also use Rabbit just to video chat like you would on FaceTime, just with a bigger screen than your phone. Which is why I prefer it over FaceTime.
Email
Yes, I’m being serious. This may just be a me thing, because I absolutely love emails. There’s just something about them!
The great thing about emailing is that it allows your friend to reply on their own time, and it’ll guarantee they see it. I mean who doesn’t get their email sent to their phone these days? Plus, it may motivate some people to delete those hundreds or thousands of unread emails they have sitting it their inbox. You know who you are.
I’ve technically never used this to keep in touch with a distant friend, but I used it all the time to stay in contact with my dad when he was deployed overseas.
Again, I’m not joking around here. You should know that by now.
I honestly can’t decide which I prefer, getting an email or getting a letter in the mail. Probably a real letter, because it’s more personal. You can see their handwriting, and it’s something they once held so it just feels more intimate and special. Plus, one of my friends likes to always doodle on the edges of the paper so it’s even prettier.
There are three downfalls to talking through snail mail though: it takes a few days for your letter to get in your friend’s hands, you have to pay for stamps, and they may forget to send one back.
But like I said, there’s just something special about holding something your friend wrote just for you.
Visits
This one is highly dependent on how far away your friend(s) live from you. Most of my friends in different states live over 1,000 miles away so it’s not plausible for me to visit more than once as the broke college student I am.
What I did my freshman year was to go back to visit during my winter break and then over summer just visit solely one friend. But that broke my bank account, so that didn't happen this year and probably won’t again.
Instead, I stayed home to work over winter break and I’m going to visit my friends over summer, and then have one of them take their turn to come visit me. Basically my plan now is to alternate with my friends on who is traveling to visit who and if I’m visiting all my friends, or just one.
For my friends who live closer, like only a state away, I see them about three to four times a year (besides when I see them during the semester). They’re about an hour to three hours drives away, so whoever is more comfortable driving does so, but they’re usually more casual short lived things like a night out, a trip to the skating rink and then a sleepover.
As obvious as all of these are, I still feel they had to be mentioned. We do tend to forget the most obvious things don’t we?
Psst...
Speaking of friends, I consider all of you my friends! And I would love to get to know each one of you better, so I would love it if you filled out the survey I made! Just clickhere to fill it out now!
How do you stay in touch with your distant friends? Let me know in the comments below!

Why I Enjoy Taking Myself on Dates
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/selfdateshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/selfdatesSun, 22 Jan 2017 13:00:00 +0000
Have you ever been out and seen a cute couple eating together at a restaurant or sharing popcorn at the movies, and thought about how you wish you had someone to takeyouout on a date?
Because same.
I know that in my very essence I’m a relationship person. I can tell because I love doing things for other people just to make their day and see them smile. I love planning elaborate surprises and planning gifts for half a year just to make sure they’re perfect. Quality relationship material I do think so myself.
But, I haven’t been in a relationship in months. Well, not a romantic one anyways. And sure, it feels just as great to do all these things for my friends, but sometimes I want someone to do something elaborate for me too. I’m not saying my friends don’t, but I can’t always count on others to bring me happiness.
That’s why I take myself out on dates.
Before I came to college it was almost unheard of for me to go out alone (unless it was shopping, duh). I didn’t want to look stupid. But then I moved across the country to go to college and wassuddenly without my trusted movie buddy. Iwas faced with a decision: either not seeing the new movie I had been dyingto see, or suckit up and just go alone.
Can you guess what I did?
That one self date made me fall in love. Now I actually prefer going to the movies alone, and actually went last week to finally seeFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
I've also taken myself out to brunch and lunch. Now, I just have to step it up a notch and take myself out to dinner, because we all know dinner time is the real date time.
Sure, I got some weird looks each time I went out to eat alone, and each time I go out alone, I always have to explain to the host that I'm not waiting for anyone and that I'm ready for a table, but I don't mind anymore. I revel in that moment of them realizing I'm confident enough to go out alone.
Besides going to see movies alone and eating out alone, I also want to start going places like museums, little coffee shops and other places alone, too.
Coming up with real date ideas is hard enough, so I totally understand how coming up with self-date ideas could be even more difficult! I mean you can't go bowling or putt-putting solo; some things are just too insanely weird to do alone and those are two of them.
So what can you do? I came up with 15 ideas for you!
I know some people can feel uncomfortable at first when they take themselves out, but it felt natural to me. I’ve always been a very independent person, so I think that’s another reason I’m so passionate about “dating” myself. I want to be okay with being alone and be comfortable doing things on my own. So while taking yourself out can improve your self-confidence itself, it can also expand your level of comfort with doing things without help.
Think about it. When you’re with someone else and you go out, you both can lean on each other to figure out any problems or issues you run into. Say you get lost downtown, but if you’re alone, you have to grow comfortable with going up to a stranger and asking for help without a crutch.
So recap: self dates not only help you grow your self-confidence, but also your level of independence. Plus, they boost your mood because they're just plain fun.
Just maybe don't start with going downtown alone and getting lost. That's not very fun.
Have you ever taken yourself on a date? If so, what did you do? If not, why? And would you be willing to go on one? Let me know in the comments below!

My Spring 2017 Semester Goals
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/01/11/Spring-2017-Goalshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/01/11/Spring-2017-GoalsSun, 15 Jan 2017 13:00:00 +0000
I've been back to school for a week now, so I thought it was about time I shared my goals for this semester. I did a post like thislast semesterand it seemed to go over well real with y'all so I thought I'd do it every semester! (Plus then it keeps me extra accountable on achieving my goals!)
Get on the dean's list again!
Basically achieve at least 3.6 GPA again. This may be a little harder since I'm taking two high-level math classes and my first real programming class, but I think I can do it! I've had a week of the classes already, and my professors are lovely so if I ever need help I'll be in good hands.
Go to a fitness class at least once a week
I fell in love with spin this past semester, but I really want to get into a new class as well. Right now I have my eyes on this barre-lates class. (Kind of like ballet and pilates mixed.) I guess we'll see how that goes!
I'm the kind of person who gets stressed out when my area is dirty and cluttered, so I really want to keep up with this goal. I kind of failed at this last semester because I ran out of paper towels and was too cheap to buy more and I only had two rags to clean with, but they were always in my dirty laundry, so I could never use them.
So, goal: clean the bathroom, vacuum, and take the trash/recycle out every week.Stay off my phone in classI was awful about this last semester. Like I would walk straight into my stats class, pull out my notebook and pens, then go straight to Twitter. Yup, I'm not letting that happen again. I've done a pretty good job so far this first week of school, but hopefully I can keep it up in the long run, too!
This is pretty similar to the "not saving all my homework until Sunday" goal from last semester, just a tad different. With the last goal I could have waited until Saturday (loophole!), but with this one I'm pushing myself to get it done with 48 hours of it being assigned. Or at least starting on it if it's something like a project.
Read three books that are not school related
Books take up a huge part of my life, but they kind of disappeared when college started for me. I hoping that if I make this a goal that I'll keep reading, and maybe even get a library card for the local library. I mean I love buying books, but they can be pretty pricey.
I've already pre-paid for a whole slew of meals and snacks before the semester even starts, so when I get to the end and find out I didn't use it all I feel like it's money wasted! All the meal plans at my school are basically the same price, so I can't change it to a lesser meal plan and save money. Last semester I could tell I just bought too much groceries and was more compelled to eat those than my school's food that I had pre-paid for. Basically, that was money I didn't have to spend on groceries and could have saved!
Do laundry at least once a week
I'm normally really good this at this, but when spring semester hit last school year I never wanted to leave my room to make the walk to the laundry room. I mean it was freezing and getting dressed to just do laundry wasn't really on my list of things I wanted to do. But I'm determined to stay up with laundry this semester! Having an overflowing hamper is just an eyesore and smelly, and nobody wants that in their dorm room.
What are your goals for this semester? I'd love to hear them! Feel free to leave them in the comments below!

Do You Need a Social Media Detox?
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/01/06/Social-Media-Detoxhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/01/06/Social-Media-DetoxSun, 08 Jan 2017 13:30:00 +0000
I know I do.
Two years ago today I didn't have a single social media app on my phone. Not because I didn't use them, but because I was challenged to stay off social media for a month.
No one thought I could make it because I'm basically the social media queen, but I did complete the challenge.
That challenge taught me I'mliterallyaddicted to my phone, and I worry too much about other people's lives and what they think about mine. Since then, I've tried to stay off my phone as much as possible, but somehow in the past year, I've started using it even more than before. I know it's partly because I started my blog, since promoting it on social media is obviously necessary, but it's also because I'd been sucked further into the black hole.
I feel pressured to post on Instagram everyday, and like I need to watch everyone's Snapchat and Instagram stories (ugh, so much effort). I know I'm not the only one who's addicted to their phone and social media either. My little sister will flip out if her phone isn't within five feet of her, and if she's showing me something on her phone she won't even let me hold it. I have friends who endlessly scroll their Facebook all day staring at videos of cute animals and strongly opinionated statuses. I can tell more than just the people I know are addicted to their phone and its Twitter and Instagram apps, because when I go out to eat I swear that everyone is on their phones and not talking.
So I know I'm not the only one who needs a social media detox. (Yes, I'm currently giving you a look).
When was the last time you spent a day without even thinking about tapping that yellow ghost or white bird?
A long time isn't it?
Now, I'm not trying to get you off social media completely, not at all. I'm just trying to help you overcome your addiction while I battle mine as well. We're in this together!
Here are the rules of my social media detox:
(Since I can't really stop posting altogether like I did in my previous challenge, I'm going to be doing a modified version.)
1. If I feel pressured to post something, then I'm just not going to post anything.
2. Don't post every day on Instagram like I have been the past few months.
3. Don't get on social media just because I'm bored. Especially while I'm eating and when I first wake up.
4. Don't watch stories every day
Basically, the rules are to only go on a social media app if I have a legit purpose to be on it. Things like promoting a new blog post, sharing something so great I can't keep it to myself, to look up a picture, to find inspiration, or to social media stalk someone (don't judge - I know you do it, too).
I love social media, I really do. But it's a necessary evil and people need to understand that. Yes, it helps promote business and bring you closer to people across the world and gives you inspiration, but it also creates stress to curate the perfect pictures and tweets. Sometimes I don't even realize how stressed out it makes me until I don't use it for a day or more.
Basically, if you feel like your phone is a literal part of you, and you no longer want to be a cyborg, I recommend going on a social media detox with me.
It doesn't have to be anything intense like a whole month without social media or even what I'm doing now, it could just be something simple like going a day without it or only letting yourself use social media for an hour or two a day. You could just make a goal to not watch any stories or to only look at the tweets that "happened while you were away" instead of going through your whole feed. There are so many different variations of social media detoxes that there is bound to be one that works for you.
You just have to put down your phone.
Have you ever gone on a social media detox? If so, how did it go? Let me know in the comments below!

The Only New Year's Resolution I didn't Abandon
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/01/01/The-Only-New-Years-Resolution-I-didnt-Abandonhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2017/01/01/The-Only-New-Years-Resolution-I-didnt-AbandonSun, 01 Jan 2017 13:00:00 +0000
It's New Year's, which means it's that time of year when we all make a resolution that we forget about in two weeks. No need to feel ashamed of that, because we've all been there! But as 2016 came to a close, I realized I was still going strong with the resolution I had made myself at the beginning of the year.
I promised myself that I would write down everything that made me happy all 365 days of 2016, and guess what? I'm still doing it.
Keeping a gratitude journal like this is such a great way to improve your mental state of mind. Writing down what makes you happy, helps you to remember it, and by omitting the negative things, you're diminishing their power over your emotions. Basically, writing down what makes you happy instantly makes you happier, and helps you stay that way in the long run.
I have absolutely no idea where I got the idea for this little project, but I loved doing it so much. Yes, some days I forgot to do it, or was too exhausted to do it the same day so I had to do it the next morning, but it was worth it.
One thing I did notice the first month was that I was letting how much I had written each day affect my mood. I thought that if I had written less than five or so things that it meant I had a sad and boring life. I got a little stressed and tried to create superficial "happy" experiences just so I had more to write in my journal. Then I realized quanity isn't nearly as important as quality. I could have 20 mediocre things to write, or I could have five crazy exceptional things to write about and you can bet that I would prefer the latter.
Not only did my gratitude journal teach me quality over quantity, but it also showed me that I have so much more to be happy for than I thought.
When something positive happens, I tend to gloss over and forget about it, but when something negative happens I can't stop thinking about it. Since I end up thinking more about the negative things in life, it seems like there are more negative aspects of my life than there are negative.
Then I started this gratitude journal and I realized I have an abundance of reasons to be happy on any given day.
It may seem like a waste of time or a pain to have to take the time out of your day to jot down just a few simple things, but I promise you it's life changing.
Plus, it really is amazingly simple. I'm sure you'd get the same outcomes as me even if you just wrote down one thing per day of the year. I mean, that's still 365 things that make you happy!
Here's my new journal for 2017 and some example entries:
So there are some examples of things you can write, and the variance of length in my entries.
I really think this was my best New Year's resolution ever, and I doubt I'm ever going to be able to top it. I still don't know what my resolution for this year is going to be, but you can bet I'm going to be continuing this and making it a tradition! I mean, how cool will it be to look back on these in a few years from now?
Have you ever kept a gratitude journal? What was your best New Year's resolution? What's your resolution for the year? Let me know in the comments below!

Sugar Plum Fairy Inspired Outfit for Winter

My favorite holiday song is the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and when I sawSummer's makeup lookinspired by the song, I had the idea to do an outfit inspired by it!
To be honest, I had absolutely no idea what a sugar plum looked like until about five minutes ago when I Googled a picture of one, but I always assumed they were purply like normal plums and I was right!
I gotthis shirta couple days ago at Aerie on sale, and I love the color of it!! I have nothing else this color (except my lipstick), so that justified me picking it up. I ended up getting an extra large because they didn't have a medium or large in stock, but it fits so well and isn't too baggy. It's perfect to wear half-tucked, or untucked over a pair of leggings!
Then this lipstick. Guys OMG this lipstick.
I've heard such wonderful things about ColourPop cosmetics, and I luckily ended up getting three of their liquid lipsticks for Christmas. Holy cow you guys, I never want to wear anything else ever again. The color literally lasts all day! I didn't have to reapply while I was at work at all! Only if you eat a big meal will you have to reapply. The one I'm wearing is a ultra matte lipstick and it's in the color Viper.
Lastly, can we talk about this dupe of the J. Crew herringbone vest? I've wanted this vest ever since I saw Amy fromPastel n Pink. I found this vest at Francesca's and instantly liked it even better than the J. Crew one because it was more of a cloth material than a moisture wicking one. Unfortunately, it's out of stock at Francesca's, so I linked a similar one for you above!
What's your favorite holiday song? Do you know what a sugar plum looks like? Have you ever tried ColourPop's products before? Let me know in the comments below!

Best Books of 2016

Happy New Year!!
What better way to start the year off than to reflect on last year? Today I'm going to be reflecting on the best books I read last year (so weird to say that and mean 2016). Hopefully you find a good book for you to read in 2017!! Because good books always make for a good year right? Right.
So let's get started! I have six books to share with y'all today, and they are ordered in no particular way. Just the luck of the draw.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before
Now I'm not one for cheesy romances, but I absolutelyloooooovedthis book. Plus, I can totally relate to Lara Jean because I write letters to people that I never intend to mail. (I'd die if anyone sent them out.) There's also a boy in this who is boyfriend goals. What more could you ask for in a book?
Oh, one more thing! I'm pretty sure I finished this book in only a one day or two, so if that doesn't attest to how great this book is, then I don't know what will.
Description from GoodReads:
"To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the story of Lara Jean, who has never openly admitted her crushes, but instead wrote each boy a letter about how she felt, sealed it, and hid it in a box under her bed. But one day Lara Jean discovers that somehow her secret box of letters has been mailed, causing all her crushes from her past to confront her about the letters: her first kiss, the boy from summer camp, even her sister's ex-boyfriend, Josh. As she learns to deal with her past loves face to face, Lara Jean discovers that something good may come out of these letters after all."
P.S. I Still Love You
Of course I had to include the sequel. I mean I literally went out and bought it the same day I finished the first book. I can't share too much without ruining the book or the one before, but I will say that, yet again, I can totally relate to Lara Jean in this book. She's struggling to figure out what love is, and though I might be young, I've have felt the same before and still don't really understand it.
Writing this makes me want to read it again, so I need to get on that before school start up again in the next couple weeks.
Description from GoodReads:
"Lara Jean didn’t expect to really fall for Peter. She and Peter were just pretending. Except suddenly they weren’t. Now Lara Jean is more confused than ever. When another boy from her past returns to her life, Lara Jean’s feelings for him return too. Can a girl be in love with two boys at once?"
The Merciless
O. M. G. You guys this book was absolutely insane. If you saw myInstagram postabout it earlier this year, then you know what I'm talking about.
If you can't stand horror or vivid descriptions, then this book is not for you!!Go ahead and scroll on to the next book, because you probably won't like the description either.
Okay, for those of you who stayed, y'all are my peeps. I love a good horror story or anything paranormal. After reading just the first two sentences of this book's description, I knew I had to buy it. This author is absolutely amazing and messes with your mind! I can't wait to read more of her books.
Description from GoodReads:
"Forgive us, Father, for we have sinned. Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream. Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed. Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls . . . unless she wants to be next. . . ."
Drowning Instinct
Hands down my number one favorite book of the year.I will totally be rereading this for years to come.
I'm no crier. Like at all. But this book had me in absolute tears at the end.
The author is child psychiatrist, so she understands that no one is perfect and we all have a good and bad side to us. Because of this, she's able to pull your heart in every which way, and leave you gasping for air at the end.
And to add to the already amazingness, this book has a student-teacher relationship in it and those are some of my favorite stories. (Nothing graphic though!)
The funny thing is, it was a total coincidence that I even came across this book. I was out and about one day, and felt like perusing the aisles of a small book shop, so I googled one and just drove to the closest one. I happened to find this book tucked away in a corner and almost didn't buy it since the description was so vague, but boy am I so happy I didn't pass.
Description from GoodReads:
"There are stories where the girl gets her prince, and they live happily ever after. (This is not one of those stories.) Jenna Lord’s first sixteen years were not exactly a fairytale. Her father is a controlling psycho and her mother is a drunk. She used to count on her older brother—until he shipped off to Afghanistan. And then, of course, there was the time she almost died in a fire. There are stories where the monster gets the girl, and we all shed tears for his innocent victim. (This is not one of those stories either.) Mitch Anderson is many things: A dedicated teacher and coach. A caring husband. A man with a certain... magnetism. And there are stories where it’s hard to be sure who’s a prince and who’s a monster, who is a victim and who should live happily ever after. (These are the most interesting stories of all.) Drowning Instinct is a novel of pain, deception, desperation, and love against the odds—and the rules."
Tempting Fate
I just realized this is the fourth romance book in this list, and I said I don't like romance. Well, I don't like cheesy ones, I like ones with twists like this one!
While I wasn't able to fully connect with the main character, as she's a 40-year-old housewife, I loved seeing things from her perspective. It was like I jumped head 24 years and had my own husband and kids. Reading this from Gabby's point of view also showed me what being a mother is really like, and made me more aware of what it feels like it to bring a child into this world. It also made me realize that even grown-ups don't always have everything together.
Like the last book, this one also brings into account that not everything can be black or white, giving it a touch of harsh reality. Something I need in a book, otherwise it feels too cliche.
Description from GoodReads:
"Gabby and Elliott have been happily married for eighteen years. They have two teenaged daughters. They have built a life together. Forty-three year old Gabby is the last person to have an affair. She can't relate to the way her friends desperately try to cling to the beauty and allure of their younger years…And yet, she too knows her youth is quickly slipping away. She could never imagine how good it would feel to have a handsome younger man show interest in her--until the night it happens. Matt makes Gabby feel sparkling, fascinating, alive--something she hasn't felt in years. What begins as a long-distance friendship soon develops into an emotional affair as Gabby discovers her limits and boundaries are not where she expects them to be. Intoxicated, Gabby has no choice but to step ever deeper into the allure of attraction and attention, never foreseeing the life-changing consequences that lie ahead. If she makes one wrong move she could lose everything--and find out what really matters most."
The Girl on the Train
I feel like everyone and their mother has talked about this book, but here I am anyways.
Honestly, I wasn't the biggest fan of this book, but the plot twist and ending were so killer (*wink*) that I couldn't not include it. It may take 200 pages for you to get really into it, but I think it's worth the wait.
Description from GoodReads:
"EVERY DAY THE SAME
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.UNTIL TODAYAnd then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?"
Have you read any of these? What were your favorite books of 2016? Let me know in the comments below!
Similar Cardigan//T-shirt//Similar Scarf//Spandex Pants//OTK Boots
Well it's officially winter guys, and while my outfit doesn't really suggest how cold it's been here in Kentucky, I promise you that it's been pretty freezing. But still no real snow yet! It's even supposed to rain on Christmas. Like please just get even colder and snow!
Enough of my ranting though.
I just got these boots and I LOVE them, and I got them 60% off!! They actually go over my knee, unlike my other OTK boots from Target. And these are much more practical since the heel is only about and inch or so. Plus, is it just me or is gray just so winter? I've also been so into gray lately, too. Like forget black and white, I want all gray everything. #FiftyShadesofGray (I'm so funny.)
Also, I'm not the kind of person to wear leggings as pants. These aren't even technically leggings, they're spandex pants from Victoria's Secret! So they're extra thick and totally not see through, and they have pockets on the sides!! I love these so much and wear them way too often (mostly because I work there and can wear them there).
One more thing, I've been so fed up with the color blue all of 2016, but I've actually started to get back into wearing it again. Mostly because it's such a winter color, but also because it really brings out my eyes and I forgot that was a thing.
What colors do you think are "so winter"? Do you ever wear certain colors to bring out your eyes? Are you over the OTK boot trend yet?

The Ultimate Guide to Getting the Cheapest Textbooks (and how to sell your used ones!)
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/12/14/Cheapest-Textbookshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/12/14/Cheapest-TextbooksSun, 18 Dec 2016 16:20:00 +0000
We're almost to that time where we have to pour out money to buy those dreaded textbooks again. I think a lot of college students struggle with buying textbooks because of how expensive they can be, and how difficult it can be to find the best deal on them.
Or they just give in and don't even try to get the best deal and purchase them all at their college's bookstore extremely overpriced. (I feel you.)After doing that my first semester of college, I was determined to never spend that much money on books ever again.
Compare prices
I'm not going to to say to never buy books from you college bookstore because that would be bad advice. I've heard a lot of people give this advice to freshman and I don't agree with itat all. I don't agree with it because I actually got my three books for English this last semester cheaper at the bookstore than what I could have gotten at any other retailer. So while college bookstores typically highly overprice their books, it never hurts to check.
This is when you might be asking, "Caitlyn, what other retailers could you possibly get textbooks from?"
There. Are. So. Many.
That's why I like to useSlugbooks.comto compare prices. Slugbooks compares prices from Amazon, Abe Books, Valore Books, Chegg, and Campus Book Rentals. I've gotten books from everyone of these except Campus Book Rentals, but since it's on Slugbooks I'm pretty positive it's a legit place to get books from.
Just be careful when getting books from Abe Books, because sometimes it will be the international edition, which is not the one you want! So just be sure to check in the book's description!
I told one of my best friends about Slugbooks when she was complaining about how much her books for this last semester were going to cost (over $200) and she told me that she got them all for $53!! How amazing is that!?
Also, another good place to get books is Barnes and Nobles. I rented one of my books from there this last semester!
Rent, Rent, Rent
You should almost never be buying books. I mean are you really going to ever need that Statistics book again? Didn't think so. I mean I'm a math major and I know even I won't need it again.
Just be careful where you're renting from, because most rental books don't come with supplemental products like DVDs or other things your professor may want you to have.
Renting is also great because most places allow for moderate highlighting and notes to be taken in the book, and you can save so much money!! Then you also don't have to worry about selling back your books at the end of the semester.
Selling Textbooks
However, if you did end up buying a book and would like to sell it back, I got you.
There are three options for selling books: you can try to sell them back to your school's bookstore (if you got it there), but I've heard they don't give too much, you could try to sell it to a friend who needs it, or you could sell it online at a site likeBookScouter.com.
I used BookScouter after my first semester when I bought all my books. It was a super easy process and totally legitimate! Just enter the ISBN of your textbook that you want to sell, and all the places that would buy the book from you pop up and how much they would offer. Just a heads up: hardback books, new books, and popular topics books (like computer science and sciences) go for much more money than other textbooks.
Free books!?
There are two ways that I know of to get free books: get books from a friend or get books from a lending library.
I got one book from a friend of a friend for this last semester, and I'm so glad because we never even used the book. I'm not sure if every college has a lending library, but NKU does.
Basically, students will donate their old textbooks for the school to give away to student who need them in the future. I've never used it personally, mostly because I'm too lazy to go ask if they have any of the books I need. But considering how much textbooks are, it's a great way to save money!!
Where do you get your textbooks from? Do you have any tips that I forgot to mention?? Let me know in the comments below!!!

Happy Friday!! And it's a special friday because it's the last official day of my fall semester!! (I actually finished my last final yesterday though. Holla!)
This week, I'm sharing my holy grail red lipstick! I get compliments on it all the time, and it's literally my favorite formula. Even without lip liner (I lost mine. Oops.) or any fancy make-up tricks, the lipstick stays put on for hours! Even after eating. How wonderful is that?! Plus, it's drugstore, so it's super cheap!
The name of the lipstick is Revlon Really Red. (Also, yes I'm hyper aware that the photo in the widget is of an orange lipstick, it wouldn't let me use the photo of the red one! But it still links directly to my favorite lipstick, not the orange one!)
Red is the perfect color for the holidays, not just because it's a staple Christmas color, but because it daring and bold and brings fun to the otherwise gray and bleak winter months. That's why you almost always find me sporting red lips in the winter! Plus, I just find I'm more inclined to wear red in the winter than during other seasons.
What's your favorite color to wear in the winter? Do you have a holy grail red lipstick? I'd love to know what it is! Let me know in the comments below!

Why I Went Vegetarian (+ Commonly Asked Questions)
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/12/07/Why-I-Went-Vegetarianhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/12/07/Why-I-Went-VegetarianSun, 11 Dec 2016 23:28:17 +0000
I never thought I would go vegetarian. Even just four months ago I never planned on making the switch. I was still the person who loved when broccoli slaw came with bacon, always wanted ham, and ate chicken basically every day.
Now I'm a vegetarian and can barely stomach the idea of eating any of that. Basically I made a huge 180 twist. All of this started because of one simple word.
Flesh.
I'm gagging and cringing inwardly just typing that out. Like doesn't the word remind you skin and muscle that was skinned off of an animal, or even a person? Maybe that's just me and I'm watching too much Supernatural. (Sorry for that nasty imagery.)
Anyways, the story behind the word. So one of my favorite YouTubers ever isMarissaLace, and she is actually a vegan. She's not preachy about her lifestyle at all, but she often refers to meat as flesh, and it just really got to me. I couldn't eat lunch meat or a turkey burger without my stomach churning and thinking about that nasty imagery from my last paragraph.
So that's why I made the switch to a vegetarian diet. It's been a little over two months since I made the switch officially, and I feel great. I've definitely noticed that I don't break out as much and that I have lost a little weight. Nothing extreme or anything, but I'm not complaining about either one.
I'm not sure if this is going to be a permanent thing or if it's just a phase I'm going through, but as of right now I'm not eating any meat and I feel great.
I thought I'd also address some of the common questions I get about my diet here as well:
"You don't eat meat?! Well then whatdoyou eat?"
This question makes me laugh. People ask this question like meat is the only thing you can eat, and obviously there are so many different foods! My diet currently consists of a lot of vegetables, fruits, beans, potatoes, rice, cold and hot cereals and veggie burgers. Basically, carbs on carbs on carbs.
"Doesn't eating all those carbs make you gain weight?"
I get pretty worked up when people ask me this question for two reasons: 1) I didn't make the switch to lose or gain weight, and either one shouldn't make me feel bad, and 2) the questions sets up carbs as a
villain. Carbohydrates are not the villain. Overeating and eating little amounts of fruits and vegetables are villainous.
So no, eating all those carbs doesn't make me gain weight.
"How do you get enough protein?"
I don't mind answering this question, but I feel like no one ever believes my answer. So, the average American actually consumes more protein than they need in a day -- only 45 to 65 grams a day. I'm able to easily obtained this amount by eating eggs, dairy products, legumes, beans, soy, tofu and seeds.
Also, just a little disclaimer. I didn't write this post to convince people to drop meat or to preach about the vegetarian lifestyle. I just wrote this post because I got some interest in the idea from you guys!
Have you ever considered going vegetarian? Or are you vegetarian? Why did you make the switch? Would you ever try it out just for fun or to challenge yourself? Let me know in thecomments below!

What to Wear on a Rainy Day on Campus

How I feel about there being another week of school.
Similar Sweatshirt//Denim Shirt//Monogram (Currently 40% off!)//Jeans//Boots
I love rainy days. Well, not pouring rain, but like slight drizzles and gray skies. Those days are my jam, and why I need to move back to the Pacific North West when I grow up. I was even looking at grad schools in Oregon the other day. It's not too soon for that right?
Anyways, dressing for rainy days in college is so hard for me because I don't have a rain coat or rain boots. Just an umbrella. So here's what I wear instead:
A thick top and layers
Layering is so important in the colder months, and on those rainy days. That's because if you wear layers, especially a thick outer layer, if you do get rained on it shouldn't soak as much through. That way you can peel that top layer off and wear the layers underneath.
Tall boots
You want to wear boots for two reasons: because they aren't canvas so they won't get wet and because they'll protect more of your pants from getting soaked.
A statement necklace
Okay, this is essential, but it's something I like to add. I love plain and simple fashion, but I also love adding some jewelry to feel a little more dressed up and not so plain Jane.
A ponytail
Maybe it's just me, but I feel like there's no point in doing my hair when it's supposed to rain. I mean it would just get wet and nasty, so why put in the effort of curling or straightening it. Instead I opt for a ponytail, a braid, a bun or just any type of up-do that would look cute if if got messy.
No dark make-up
Just like how your hair could get ruined, so could your make-up. Especially if it's pouring rain. Because of this I try to stay away from dark eye shadows and winged eye liner when it's raining so there's no chance of me looking like a raccoon. Not cute. (Unless it's that Snapchat filter that looks like Taylor Swift from the Blank Space music video.)
How do you dress for rainy days? Do you own rain boots or a rain coat? Are you a fan of rainy days or nah? Let me know in the comments below!

I Don't Feel Like Myself Anymore: And why I see that as a good thing

I don't feel like myself right now. And I really haven't since graduating from high school almost two years ago.
And I don't have a problem with it. I see it as a good thing. Why? Because if I know that I don't feel like myself, then I'm one step closer to figuring out who I am and who I want to be.
When I recognized that I wasn't feeling like myself, which honestly took me over a year, I made a list of things that make me feel fake and a list of things that make me feel like myself.
All of the things on my bad list have one thing in common: they are all things I felt like I had to do. They were things that I felt society was telling me I had to do, things I felt like I had to do since my friends do them, or things I felt like I had to do because they were things my ex-boyfriend wanted me to do.
This list included things like be a night owl and sleeping in as long as possible, dressing like someone who just woke up, never wearing make-up, working out five days a week or more, only posting my best pictures, talking to people I don't like because I just wanted to talk to someone, and going to parties.
None of these things make me feel good, but rather make me feel fake. When I do these things I become someone else. I'd call her Caitlyn 2.0, but she's so different from me that I wouldn't even give her the same name.
Since I have a list of things I know I don't want to do or want to be like, I can cross those off my list of "possible Caitlyn traits," and add the opposite to the list instead.
On this list is: waking up early, reading before bed, being asleep before 11 pm, dressing up every day, wearing a full face of make-up, having long hair, shopping, going to the library, girl talk, taking mirror pics of my outfits, running, daydreaming and doing a spontaneous handstand or cartwheel.
Most of the things on the good list are things I did in high school. I don't think this is because I want to live in the past, because there are certainly things about high school I do not want to relive, but because some huge changes occurred in my life after graduating and I don't like the way I reacted and changed as a result.
All of these things help define who I am as a person, but somehow I started to drift away from them as life got crazy. A.k.a. the start of college. When I started college last fall I knew I was going to change a lot, and I have, but not all of those changes were ones I wanted to happen.
After high school, I moved out of the state I had lived in for the majority of my high school career, and started college in Kentucky. Because of the move and starting college, I began spending a lot more time alone and talking to people less and less as my old and new friends got busier and I got out of a relationship I had been in almost a year.
A year may not seem like a long time, but a lot can change in a year. I had grown accustomed to always having someone there for me while in that relationship, so when I no longer had that I broke down and didn't know where to turn. I kept thinking about how I wanted to go back to being myself, but I didn't know who I was any longer.
This was this past February. Since then, I've spent these last 10 months rediscovering myself.
I took notes of what made me happy and what didn't, changing what I did accordingly. I spent more time alone instead of around toxic people. I've worked on being my own best friend and making my relationship with myself my number one priority. And it's been the most amazing 10 months.
It really has, but I still don't feel like who I truly am nor who I want to be.
Why? Because I've changed so much negatively and not only do I have to reverse these changes, but I also have to add new changes, and change doesn't come fast nor easy. It's a long process and me writing this is me opening accepting this fact with open arms.
While some of the experiences I've had in the last year and a half haven't been the most pleasant, they led me to where I am today and made me realize I wasn't happy with who I was.
Now I know the kind of girl I want to be and everyday I'm becoming one step closer to that girl, and that's all that matters.
Have you ever felt like someone else before? What did you do about it? What are three things that make you feel like yourself? Let me know in the comments below!

I've linked the similar items below in the clickable widget to show you guys what they look like!
The holidays are coming! And you know what that means? Red and green everything!! I ain't mad about it because those are two of my favorite colors.
Gold and silver are also popular holiday colors, but I think gold is the most deserving of its popularity. That's why I look for pieces with gold details like this gorgeous vest from Francesca's and these bow earrings! I want this vest in every color! It's awesome because the pockets for your hands aren't awkwardly placed and then they have double pockets for your phone, ID, lipstick, keys, or whatever else you want to keep close to you!
I started wearing button ups under sweaters in high school, and I'm so glad I did. That extra layer helps to keep you so much warmer than just a sweater! And adding the vest makes it even more cozy. You could also add a scarf if it's actually freezing outside, too.
Also, can we talk about these earrings? I got them a couple years ago on impulse, and I am so glad I did! They always add the right amount of festivity to any outfit, and always get compliments!
Do you ever layer button ups and sweaters? Do you prefer silver or gold for the holidays? What clothing pieces scream Christmas to you? Let me know in the comments below!

How to Survive Living with a Random Roommate
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/11/26/Living-with-Random-Roommatehttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/11/26/Living-with-Random-RoommateSun, 27 Nov 2016 16:18:16 +0000
I've never had a roommate that I've known beforehand.
I've had three roommates since starting college, and I didn't know a single one before we lived together. Through the different roommates I've had, I've learned how to deal with tough situations and how to make it not so awkward, something I think every person wants a little less of in their life. Especially in college.
So how did I survive living with total strangers? By follow these four rules:
1. Set boundaries.
This can be extremely awkward to bring up for some college students (um, me), but it's absolutely imperative! Otherwise, you'll be letting your roommate do whatever they want.
A good way to get this out of the way early is by filling out a roommate agreement. My college hands them out for students to complete, or you could just create your own or find one online! Here's an awesome one fromHer Campus!
Or if just talking is more your style, you can do that as well!
Just be sure to cover these topics:
- Who's buying cleaning supplies and toilet paper?
- Are guests allowed over? When? Do they need to get permission to have them over?
- Are you going to share anything? Food? TV? Speakers? Dishes?
- Who's taking out the trash/recycle and do the dishes? Is there a schedule?
- How loud can music/TV be or must headphones be worn?
- When is lights out?
2. Don't get petty.
If your roommate repeatedly forgets to take out the trash or never replaces the toilet paper, don't get petty. That means, don't pile up the trash and never take it out, waiting on them to do it, and don't hide your toilet paper so only you can use it until they buy their own.
While they may be tempting, these actions won't get you anywhere in the long run. Your roommate will just get upset with you in turn, and may end up doing the same to you.
Instead, take care of the issue yourself, and then casually mention to them that it's their turn to take out the trash next or their turn to buy toilet paper. Or you can leave sticky note for them saying something along the lines of, "Hey, I took the trash out before class. So tag you're it!"
3. Don't expect perfection.
If you're living with a random roommate, chances are you guys are not going to get along 100 percent of the time, and that you're not going to end up as best friends forever. It does happen, but those seem to be very rare cases.
Knowing this, don't going into the relationship thinking everything is going to work out just how you want it to. Disagreements, fights, and misunderstandings are bound to come. But you don't have to be so hard on your new roommate.
Don't compare them to the perfect roommate you envision in your head, because that's not who they are. They're a human being, and like the rest of us they make mistakes.
We all forget to do the dishes sometimes or get so busy that we have no motivation to clean our side of the room. So don't be so hard on them, because like you, they have a lot more going on in their life than just the appearance of their room.
If you can be understanding and forgiving, then you'll never have a problem with any of your roommates.
That being said though:
4. Stand up for yourself.
Don't let your roommate walk all over you or take advantage of you.
If they always have friends over and you can't study or sleep, don't be afraid to tell them to keep it down or talk to your roommate privately about it. Just let them know how important it is to you by saying things like, "I really need to study because I have a huge test tomorrow." Or, "I have to work at 8 am, so I really need to get a good night's sleep tonight."
If your roommate ever does anything that concerns you or makes you feel highly uncomfortable, never hesitate to reach out to an RA or hall director. They're there to help you. If you're scared to reach out to them because you think our roommate will be really angry, be sure to tell the RA that. Youshould never have to be scared of the person you live with.
So there you have it, my four holy grail rules to living with total strangers. I've made it this far using these, and they haven't failed yet! I hope you learned something to help you!
Have you ever lived with a random roommate? Did it go well? How do you deal with tough situations between you and your roommate? Let me know in the comments below!

How to Save Money in College
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/11/19/Save-Money-in-Collegehttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/11/19/Save-Money-in-CollegeSun, 20 Nov 2016 15:15:00 +0000
As a shopaholic, I know how hard it can be to save money in college. Especially around the holidays when all the sales keep popping up nonstop! So today I rounded up some of the ways I save money throughout the school year!
Always ask for student discount!
Nine times out of the ten, the sales associate will probably say they don't offer it, but you won't regret asking when you find out they do have it! One time I didn't ask because I knew they would say no, and then as I was walking out the store I saw they did offer it! I was so upset. So learn from my mistake and always ask!
Here'sa listof stores that always offer student discount!
While speaking of student discount, I'm just going to throw these two things out there: both Spotify and Apple Music offer a 50% off student rate and you get a six month free trial of Amazon Prime!
The only thing about the Amazon Prime trial, is they won't tell you when your six months are up, so I woke up one day with a charge from them without knowing why. I quickly contacted them to undo the subscription and they had my money back in my account within 24 hours. It wasn't that big a deal, but still something to take note of.
Save on Textbooks
I'm going to be doing a whole post on this soon (watch out for that!), so I won't go too into detail here.
You should basically never be buying books, and never be buying them from your campus bookstore. Instead, opt for renting and use sites likeslugbooks.comto find the best deal on the books you need.
If you do end up buying your books, be sure to sell them at the end of the semester! I've usedbookscouter.comto sell books before, and I would highly recommend it!
Use Coupons and Rewards at the Grocery!
When I say coupons, I mean both paper coupons and couponing apps.
My favorite couponing app is Ibotta. It's super simple to use and has more than just grocery coupons. It has coupons for pharmacy stores like Walgreens and CVS, and clothing stores like H&M and Charlotte Russe.
Basically, you redeem an offer in the app by purchasing an item listed, and then scanning the product and taking a picture of your receipt and submitting it through the app.
The savings of the coupons are .25 cents off to a couple dollars off. It all depends on the item.
As soon as you rack up $20 in savings, you can withdraw the money into a PayPal account, a Venmo account, or have it put on a gift card. The gift card options are for places like Target, Amazon, Sam's Club, Starbucks, Walmart and even clothing stores like Gap.
Now $20 may seem like it would take a long time to save up, but I earned that much in less than one semester. Plus, you can earn it even faster if you do the bonuses or work with a team. And you can get over halfway there right now if you sign up with the code "dcasjki." By entering this code when signing up, you earn an extra $10 immediately after redeeming your first rebate!
Another app that offers great deals on groceries, is Walmart's Savings Catcher. I've personally never used it because I'm not a fan of Walmart, but I've heard great things about it from other bloggers.Basically, every time after you make a purchase at Walmart, you take a picture of your receipt on the app, and Walmart checks if you got the best price on all the items you purchased. So, if another store offered the items you bought for cheaper, you get the difference back on a Walmart gift card!
Also, if your local grocery store offers a rewards program, you should be using it! You may only save a couple dollars each time you go, but those few dollars add up over the course of the school year. Plus, some also have gas rewards, which is always a nice bonus.
Saving at the Mall
My favorite type of saving.
I have two apps and one website to share that I always use when I shop both in-store and online.
My personal favorite is Shopular.
Shopular compiles coupons, promotions and weekly ads for over 200 stores. Every time I go out, I check the app for in-store promotions I can use, and I always find at least one. The app also has online coupons, but I hardly ever remember to check it when I shop online because I'm usually looking atretailmenot.com.
Other real cool things about Shopular is it will let you save coupons you like for easy access later, and it tells you when the coupons end so you don't try to use an expired one. (So humiliating!)
Plus, they always have those $3.50 off Ulta coupons and 40% off Michael's coupons. Score!
The other app I wanted to touch on is called Unidays.
Basically, it's a company that gets big name stores to offer student discounts, but usually only for a limited time. Since these are student discounts, when you sign up you have to use your email associated with your college. You can sign up by downloading the app, or do it onlinehere!
They usually have discounts for my favorite online stores: Modcloth and Boohoo. The latter of which is perfect for college students because everything is even cheaper than Forever 21, and their sweaters are amazing!
And those are all of the tricks I use to save money during the school year! I hope you picked up a new app or website from this post to help you out!
What do you do to save money during the school year? Have you heard of any of the apps or websites I shared? Let me know in the comments below!
P.S. While proofreading this I realized that it kind of sounds sponsored. This is just a heads up that it's not! However, if you do you the code I gave for Ibotta, or sign up for Unidays using the the link I gave, I will get a $5 credit to my account.

Happy Friday guys! Only 6 more days until Thanksgiving, 4 more days until I'm on Thanksgiving break, and 0 days until the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them! I wouldn't say I'm a Potterhead, but I do love the franchise and can't wait to see this movie! (Plus, Eddie Redmayne is really hot. Just me?)
I've always loved the costuming of the Harry Potter world, because it's really vintage and rustic looking. I thought those vibes coincided great with Thanksgiving, so I bring to you my wizarding world inspired Thanksgiving outfit!
Speaking of vintage, all of the pieces I'm wearing are over a year old so I linked items there were as similar as possible! I did put the exact time turner though because it's the real one. *wink*

What are you planning on wearing for Thanksgiving? What are your plans for Thanksgiving? Are you a Potterhead? Are you going to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Thankful Thursday! This week I'm going to be sharing why I'm thankful for two of the most important people in my life: my parents.
Mom
Thank you for always pushing me to be the best that I can be. Thank you for keeping me on top of assignments in school, and for instilling the habit of doing homework right after school into my brain (even if I don't do that today, whoops).
Thank you for making me believe I am capable of great things.
Thank you for always taking care of my laundry and making my bed. Those are definitely two things I took for granted growing up.
Thank you for teaching me to stand up for myself, and not being afraid to ask questions in the classroom or workplace.
Thank you for being an inspiration to me. I'll never understand how you stay so on top of life and always manage to keep the house spotless. I can manage to stay on top of life, but keeping my dorm spotless? It just doesn't happen.
Thank you for always tagging me in things regarding Justin Bieber, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Hiddleston on Facebook and Instagram.
Thank you for all the times you were my alarm clock. I have no idea how you managed to wake up so early all these years, and still do it for Lauren today.
Thank you for being super protective and always making sure I got to school, work or my friend's house okay. I know I complained about having to text you all the time, but it feels nice to know that someone cares so deeply about you.
Thank you for being an amazing mother.
Dad
Thank you for being my running buddy, and go-to person to talk about my fitness achievements. I always loved running with you because you pushed my to go faster, without really forcing me to, since you adjusted your pace to mine. Thank you for slowing down for me, otherwise I never would have run so much with you. Also, thanks for the breathing technique you taught me, I still use it and have even taught it to others.
Thank you for teaching me some of the army cadences. My favorites are Drip Drop, I Found a Peanut and I'm Gunna Go Eat Worms.
Thank you for showing up to most (if not all) of my track and cross country meets, and cheering me on loud enough for me to hear you on the backstretch. Oh, and thanks for always driving me home.
Thank you for teaching me how to drive, and not freaking out in the passengers seat when I was driving. And thank you for letting me listen to my radio stations no matter if I was driving or not.
Thank you for sharing my love of Spite Malice. (I can't wait for you to come home so I can't beat both you and Grandma.)
Thank you for introducing me to the beauty of nature when I was little, by taking me fishing. I know I lost my love of the outdoor until very recently, but it is back now and I have actually kind of missed fishing.
Thank you for all the times you've driven me to the airport, including the time you drove me and my friends to the airport for Denver, and picked us up and took us home.
Thank you for all the times I got to drive your truck. I always loved driving her (note I didn't say it), because she made me feel powerful. Driving a truck is just super cool.
Thank you for being the best dad ever.

How to Survive Thanksgiving as a Vegetarian
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/11/13/How-to-Survive-Thanksgiving-as-a-Vegetarianhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/11/13/How-to-Survive-Thanksgiving-as-a-VegetarianSun, 13 Nov 2016 18:30:00 +0000
Surprise! I'm a vegetarian!
And a new one at that. I'm not sure of the exact date, because I slowly transitioned into the lifestyle starting back in August, but I do know that I'm very nervous about Thanksgiving approaching.
Thanksgiving is all about turkey and ham, and I those are not things I want to include in my diet anymore.(I don't want to get into it in this post, but if you'd like to see something about why I made the change, let me know in the comments!)Because I no longer eat the two main staples of the holiday, I'm worried the holiday won't go over very well. Think leaving dissatisfied food-wise and exhausted from explaining my food choices.
I knew I couldn't be the only vegetarian dreading the approach of the holiday (I'm never been a big fan of the holiday anyways), so I came up with a few tips on how to keep things going smoothly and making sure I get enough to eat.
1. Be patient with those who ask why you're avoiding meat.
No one wants to cause a scene during Thanksgiving, so be patient and understanding with the family members who are interested in your food choices.
I never thought I could be a vegetarian, so I'm sure I would have teased someone before I made the transition to the diet myself. People are always curious about things they don't understand, so explain it to them.
If someone gets upset that you won't eat the turkey they spent so long cooking, then that's their problem. Don't feel obligated to eat some just because you don't want to upset anybody. The only person who should control what goes into your body is you.
That being said:
2. Don't get down on yourself if you do eat meat.
But only if you do so willingly, and not with someone shoving it on your plate.
I don't know about you, but ham was always my favorite meat. One of the reasons I'm so nervous about the big day is because I'm worried I'm going to cave and sneak a bite or two.
But really what's wrong with that? I'm new to the lifestyle, and it'll be my first time surrounded by meat all day, so I don't see the point of stressing about having some meat.
If you do decide to eat some ham or turkey, just tell yourself that now you have all your meat cravings out of your system.
3. Don't feel ashamed to bring your own meat replacement.
I won't be doing this this year, but I have done this is different situations in years past.
Growing up, I never liked hot dogs or hamburgers, so going to cookouts was painful for me. Eventually I learned to bring chicken or a turkey burger for myself, and soon everyone knew to always have turkey burgers on hand for me. They weren't annoyed when I brought something to replace hot dogs or hamburgers, so why should they be annoyed if I brought something to replace meat?
The one thing with this is you shouldn't expect your host to cook your meat replacement for you, unless they offer. Maybe even bring extra, just in case you have some family members who want to try something new!
4. Have no worries about getting enough to eat.
Almost all Thanksgiving side-dishes and all desserts are vegetarians friendly. Rolls and mashed potatoes anyone?
I'm drooling already.
If you really are worried about getting enough to eat, here's a list of common Thanksgivings foods that are vegetarian: green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, rolls, salad, cranberry sauce, corn, stuffing (some people do put meat in their's though, so be sure to double check!), pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll and all the other desserts!
Are you a vegetarian? If, so how do you handle Thanksgiving? If not, what's your favorite Thanksgiving dish? Do you want to see a post on why I went vegetarian? Let me know in the comments below!

Lace-up Blouse and OTK Boots: Part One

Happy Friday! I am unbelievably grateful it's finally the weekend because this week has seen some major lows. A.k.a my bedroom light kept turning on and off by itself randomly (Supernatural anyone?), all the hate circulating the country right now, I got cookies only to realize I had no milk, a huge Christmas present I was excited to give was shot down, and I lost all my Snapchat streaks. #FirstWorldProblems
Two good things did come out of this week though: I got a huge hit of writing inspiration and I got to have a full fledged photoshoot with my friend! And by full fledged I mean turning a car into a dressing room and switching shirts in the middle of a forest.
Just casual things.
Trying to look graceful is real hard y'all. And is it just me or does the shirt and the foggy forest give them a witchy vibe? Modern Hocus Pocus anyone?
I got these boots on sale for less than $50, and I have a love hate relationship with them.
I had to go a size up in them because my calves are apparently too big (never thought I would have to say that), and while they are comfy to walk in at first, they start to hurt the balls of your feet if you wear them all day around campus.
Definitely reserved for days requiring limited walking.
I realized with the tall boots and bell sleeves I could also classify this as a 70's inspired outfit, so I had to throw up my signature peace sign.
Peace signs have always been my default setting. One time in high school, a teacher said hi to me in the hallway and I panicked and threw up a peace sign. Mortifying.
Bralette//Jeans//Necklace//Boots
I couldn't find the exact shirt online, so I linked a few with the same vibe above!
This kind of shirt is usually filed under "boho" for me, and that is not my style at all. But then I realized the style of shirt is also very pirate-esqe, one of my obsessions, and now I want a closet full of them! I'm lusting over the ruffle front one I linked.
The one I wore for these picture isn't actually mine, it's my good friend Kylie's! Speaking of which, next week's Fashion Friday post is going to be how she styled the shirt! I'm so excited to share her outfit with y'all because I'm in love with the pictures I took of her!
Do you like the boho style? Are you a fan of these pirate inspired shirts? Am I the only one with a thing for peace signs? What does this outfit remind you of: a pirate, a witch, the 70s, or something completely different? Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Thursday! You know what that means, another installment in my Thankful Thursday series!
This week I'm going to share why I'm thankful for my little sister.
Lauren
I am beyond grateful that we became those sisters who are best friends. Just a few years ago, all we did was argue, but now I love hanging out with you and miss you all the time when I'm away at college. I wish we were closer in age so that one day we could dorm together. For now, I guess I'll just have to get you to come over more often or I'll just have to visit home more often. I'm so excited to come home this weekend, and that Thanksgiving break and winter break are quickly approaching.
I need more quality Caitlyn and Lauren time.
You never fail to make me laugh or smile, and I always love hearing stories about your crazy friends. I hope you tell your friends stories about the crazy things I've done, too. Speaking of your friends, thank you for including me in your sleepovers at the house this summer. It meant a lot to me for you to actually want me around when your friends were over.
Thank you for actually wanting to spend time with me.
I never thought I would say this, but thank you for stealing my clothes from time to time. It makes me feel like a cool big sister, and like I have an outstanding sense of style. (That doesn't mean raid my closet on the daily though.)
Thank you for being undeniably you. I've told you this before, but I really admire how honestly you you are. You don't pretend to be someone else, and you say and do whatever you feel like doing, even if some people might give you looks.
Thank you for singing and dancing with me in public. Thank you for signing Christmas carols with me in Hobby Lobby. Thank you for screaming We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together with me on the walks we used to take back in Washington. Thank you for making silly dance videos with me. Thank you for sharing my love of Justin Bieber, oh and Shawn Mendes, too. (I call dibs on Shawn though.)
Thank you for being an inspiration to me. You are the most dedicated 13-year-old that I know. You are going to go far in life with the dedication you have to soccer. Thank you for trying to teach me how to play soccer, even though I'm so bad I bruised my ankles in doing so.
Thank you for sharing my love of reading. I live for the nights when we sat up and told each other about the book we were reading or had just finished. Actually, I live for any night where we just sat in my room, or your room, and just talked. I especially cherish the nights when you fell asleep in bed with me. Even though you're kind of a pain to share a bed with.
Thank you for trying to keep me cool and in the know. You taught me how to whip and nae nae and I will forever be grateful. Thank you for keeping me up to date on all the new slang, like savage, dope and fam.
Thank you for being my OG photographer. I think I first had you take a picture of me back in the 10th grade, so you've got four years and counting of photography experience. I always did tell you that I'm going to make you into a professional photographer, didn't I?
Thank you for all the amazing cards and presents you have ever made me. I still have that birthday card you gave me that addressed me as Mrs. Hiddleston and I will never throw it away. But my favorite gift from you was what you gave me for my birthday this year.
Speaking of, before I get into anything else, can we just take a second and fully appreciate how thoughtful my sister is?
For my birthday this year, she filled up a little jar with tons of little notes, some are pictured below.
Ugh, I can't get over how cute this was! I keep the jar by my bed, and just seeing it there, not even opening it, makes me instantly happier and grateful. A few of the notes I even tacked up on my inspiration board because I loved them so dearly.
Thank you for making me feel loved and for making me feel like an exceptional older sister.
Thank you for being the dopest (did I use that word right?) little sister out there.
Who are you thankful for in your life? Let me know in the comments below!

A Letter From the Daughter of an Army Man
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/11/04/Daughter-of-an-Army-Manhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/11/04/Daughter-of-an-Army-ManSun, 06 Nov 2016 20:05:22 +0000
Dear America,
Every Veteran's Day I take to Facebook and write something about the military, my dad and how my dad being in the military has affect me. This year I'm bringing that here, so more than just my Facebook friends can read it.
Why do I want more people to read what I write on Veteran's Day?
I want people to read this because there are far too many people out there is this country who don't respect the work of our current and fallen soldiers. There are too many people out there who credit the making of America to "fat white men." There are too many people out there who think military men are just glorified killing machines. There are too many people out there who don't know the sacrifices our veterans have made. There are too many people out there who don't understand the things our veterans have gone through. There are too many people out there who don't appreciate the people who fought for our freedom and still are. There are too many people out there who don't understand what it's like to be a part of a military family.
That's why I write something every Veteran's Day. But this year, it's coming a little early to prove a point.
Let me tell you something about me: I absolutely refuse to watch war movies.
Not even the critically acclaimed ones like Brave Heart, American Sniper, Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, or The Hurt Locker.
I refuse to watch war movies because I like to look the other way and pretend my dad never had to go through anything close to that. I never asked him what he did when he was deployed either.
Why? Why do I look the other way and pretend it never happened?
Not because I'm naive, but because it breaks my heart and brings me to tears just typing this out that anyone, let alone my father, would have gone through anything depicted in movies like that.
It's not because of the gory scenes or watching "death" on the screen, it's the thought of the person on the screen being my father, my grandfather, or even anyone who hasn't actually served before, like my brother or myself or just anyone I've ever come into contact with before.
No one deserves to see all the people around them die. No one deserves to have to walk into battle not knowing if they're ever going to make it home. No one deserves to be shot at, blown up or lit on fire. No one deserves to go to war. But of course, the world doesn't work that way.
Today I'm going to share a story with y'all.
You know how I said I refuse to watch war movies? Well, I broke that rule.
Last Friday night I went to see Hacksaw Ridge.
Movie poster fromHacksawRidge.movie
It's the story of a young boy who refuses to touch a weapon or fight, a conscientious objector, who joined the army during WWII. He was an army medic and went into battle with no weapon whatsoever.
Going into war with a weapon with a rifle is scary enough, but without one? Holy crap. Talk about a real life horror movie either way.
Anyways, the movie depicted the US army fighting Japanese troops in Okinawa, Japan at a site called Hacksaw Ridge; a 350-ft cliff atop which the Japanese hid out in. The US soldiers had to climb the ridge and then face the Japanese soldiers when neither could see because of the smoke from all the explosions.
I watched soldiers get their guts spilled, their legs blown off, and their heads shot. I watched soldiers be lit on fire and stabbed with bayonets. All the while Desmond was running around helping the wounded with no weapon whatsoever and I was sobbing.
No lie, I started crying within the first 30 seconds of the movie and didn't stop until about an hour after the movie. Sorry to the guy sitting next to me.
I knew I was going to see a war movie, but I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I've always had mad respect for our veterans, but my veneration for them skyrocketed after seeing this movie.
Movie poster fromHacksawRidge.movie
We're in a society where it's "normal" to hear about people dying and fighting for their life, but you never understand how real it is until you experience it yourself, or second hand when a loved one of your's dies while serving, or third hand (is that a thing?) like I did while watching the movie.
Of course, I always knew people were dying in war, but because I had fully sheltered myself from the reality of war by refusing to watch the movies or talk to my dad about what really happens overseas, I never really connected the dots. While watching this movie, I felt all the years of emotions pent up about the reality behind war and deployment be released. No wonder I cried so much.
I don't want to ruin the whole movie, so I'll just say one more thing: Desmond singlehandedly saved 75 men over a period of 12 hours and almost died multiple times. Can you understand why I couldn't stop bawling now?
Now, I know that soldiers these days don't go into battle unprepared like Desmond, and I know that fighting conditions are not exactly the same, but ladies and gentlemen, things like this are what the veterans of our country have gone through. They've seen men die right before their eyes, and all around them. Then they come home and are treated like crap by the country they fought to protect. They come home and have to adjust the the normal day-to-day life of a civilian, which can be really freaking hard for some veterans.
In the movie, it even showed soldiers scared of the touch of their friends and soldiers shaking unable to control their body's response to what they just experienced. I left the theater shaking and unable to walk straight just from watching it all happen from a safe location, so I can only imagine how those men could control their bodies.
PTSD is a real thing people.
Time for another story:
There's a former Marine in my ASL class this semester, and for the class we have to attend a deaf community event. A lot of the students went to a deaf coffee chat at a local Starbucks, and it was so crowded with deaf and hearing people that it was hard to move around.
The ex-Marine and I were talking to these two sweet old ladies, but he was having a very difficult time understanding anything she was signing and couldn't remember anything himself. This was strange because he did pretty well in class.
After the conversation ended with the ladies, he turned to me and said, "I'm sorry. I have PTSD and social anxiety so being in situations like this with a lot of people is hard for me."
A few minutes later I slipped away to use the restroom and I ran into him again. He was going into the men's restroom, but he spotted me first and asked, "Are you going to hide in the bathroom, too?"
If you thought modern soldiers had it so much easier than soldiers 70 years ago, then I hope your mind is changed now.
Modern war is still war, and even though fighting tactics may be different, or the enemy may be different, people still risk their lives everyday fighting for our country and they deserve respect and attention, and not just on one day, but everyday of the year.
So to those people who complain about how military personnel and their dependents getting military discounts, possible free college education, and free health insurance, sit the hell down and feel some compassion for the people serving our country for you and the people who have served for you.
Long story short, I want those ungrateful, ignorant people to show some respect for soldiers like those depicted in this movie and soldiers like my father.
Don't forget to thank our veterans, on Veteran's Day and every other day.
Oh and I love you, Dad.
Sincerely,The daughter of an army man
P.S. Hacksaw Ridge is based on a true story.Desmond Doss and most of the characters in the show were real. There was a thing or two that were changed in the movie, but they were minor things. To find out more about the real story, check out thisarticleor thiswebsite. Desmond was such an inspirational character that now I want to eat up any information I can find on him, so excuse me while I go and hunt down all the books and documentaries about him.

How to Feel Autumnal
]]>

Oversized sweaters, blanket scarves and fallen leaves are the epitome of fall, am I right? Lately I've been feeling like I've been dressing very winter, and I felt like I was skipping over fall completely! So, I made a big effort to dress as autumnal as possible.
And what better way to be autumnal than to play in a huge pile of leaves?
So funny story: the bottoms of these boots are smooth wood, thereforeveryslippery, right? Well, as I was trying to sit down on this tree, my boot slipped on a tree root that was covered in leaves and I fell and made a very loud, high-pitched noise.
To all the people on the plaza at that time, you're welcome for the entertainment.
Please excuse my ratchet nails. I just wanted to show off my midi rings! Honestly, I have so many of these that I have no idea where I got all of these. If you ever want to buy midi rings though, I would check out Etsy!
This photo reminds me of the Twilight cover of the hands holding the apple. I can't tell if that's a good or bad thing though, because I really don't like that series.
Blanket scarf//Sweater(linked similar b/c thrifted)//Jeans//Boots
I wish I could sit under this treeall day. Maybe I'll do that this weekend, and bring along my journal! I've been getting really into it again lately, so just thinking about it excites me!
I feel journaling is a very fall thing to do anyways. To me, fall is all about letting go of things that don't serve you, just like trees let their dead leaves fall, and journaling is my way of finding things that bother me and how to better myself.
While I'm journaling I always like to listen to music, and recently it's been my Fall Feels playlist, which I am still building! Honestly, I will probabaly be listening to it all year long because this kind of music is absolute favorite: acoustic, eerie and emotional.
I do have suggestions on how to feel more autumnal besides journaling and listening to music, though!
Sit in warm lighting.Fall is all about a warm color palette, so this is a must. I have a desk lamp in my dorm that is very yellow-toned, so when I'm feeling really into the season I'll turn off every light except that one and sit in bed and go about whatever I was doing. usually it's journaling, blog stuff, reading or watching Netflix.
Watch some fall themed movies and TV shows. This one is pretty obvious right? My favorites for fall are dark themed or Halloween themed, so things like Supernatural, Orange is the New Black, Arrow, Flash, American Horror Story and Bates Motel.
Go to a pumpkin patch or cider mill.Again, another obvious one! I've been to two pumpkin patches this season, but I want to go to more! I've never been to a cider mill, but I'm in love with apple cider. I wish I could find one close to where I live, but Yelp is not looking very promising in that aspect.
Get outside! What better way to embrace the season than to get out in it? You could just be sitting on your front porch, or you could go for a run or go hiking! Sadly, I haven't been able to go hiking since the leaves have changed colors, but hopefully I will get to before they all fall. (Was that a pun?) If none of those tickle your fancy, then you could go play in the leaves! All the better if you get some photos of you doing playing with them too.
How has your autumn been? What autumnal things have you been up to or want to do before the season is over? What are your favorite fall movies and TV shows? Are you a fan of blanket scarves? Have you ever had a mini photoshoot with leaves before or would you ever want to do it? Did anyone catch my Raining Men parody? (Love that song!)

I'm Thankful for My Friends

In honor of Thanksgiving being this month, I'm starting a new series about being thankful: Thankful Thursday! Every Thursday of this month I'm going to be sharing some people in my life who I extremely thankful for. For the first installment, I'm going to be telling my friends why I'm thankful to have them in my life.
Sally
Thank you for sticking with me through all the moves, time zones, different states, and now different countries! Because we've made it through all those moves and time zones and going to different high schools, I know you will always be there for me and there is nothing that can tear us apart. I mean we've made it this far haven't we?
You've helped me through some of my toughest times and put up with my rather obsessive tendency towards boys. Especially during my Bieber Fever days. Thank you for making the "That Should Be Me" music video with me. Great memories man!
Thank you for bringing out my dance fever. I don't think I would have ever developed my love of dancing if we never became friends. You are truly my favorite dance partner. Remember when I taught you how to slow dance in your kitchen before prom?
Thank you for introducing me to two of my all-time favorite artists today: Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. Thank you for going to both a T. Swift and an Ed Sheeran concert with me.
I feel like I belong when I talk to you. Anytime we're texting, Snapchatting, FaceTiming or hanging out (man it's been a hot minute since we've done that), you calm me down and make me feel wonderful inside. You can honestly make anything better.
Thank you for being my forever friend.
Emma
Our relationship may have started out strangely, and let's be honest it's still really strange. To this day you say you don't know why you invited me to your birthday party in seventh grade, but I think I finally figured out why: it was fate. We were destined to be best friends! I mean we're practically perfect for each other! No matter how long we spend apart, when we hang out it's like we were never apart.
To this day there is no one I feel more comfortable around. I couldn't ask for a better best friend. When I'm down, you always know how to make my day with your cute messages and Snapchats. It almost always brings me to tears when you text me saying you miss me and I'm the only person who doesn't annoy you. Thank you for telling me I'm the only person you like to shop with.
Thank you for always making me laugh so hard that everyone at NKU thinks I'm insane. Thank you for having screenshot worthy conversations with meallthe time.
Thank you for sharing my love of historical movies and hot British guys. Speaking of British things and hot guys, thank you for getting me into Doctor Who and Supernatural.
Thank you for missing me so much that you paid for half my flight to visit you, and thank you for all the food and Ubers you paid for while I was there. Thank you for making me food, and trying sour candies with me, and introducing me to the Mummy movies. Thank you for watching American Horror Story with me, and never watching it without me.
Thank you for always being there to listen to my rants, give me grown up advice and to make me feel like the teenager I am, instead of the grandma I act like. Thank you for being someone I can actually hold intellectual conversations with and not hate you afterwards.
Thank you for accepting me for who I am, and always knowing what to say to make me feel good. But most of all, thank you for the GOALS shirt.
Thank you for being the bestest friend ever.
Kylie
Thank you for making me feel like a wonderful friend and beautiful person. You always say I'm photogenic and respond to my photos with comments that make me feel gorgeous. Thank you for always telling me I look cute. I love that you call me an amazing friend and that you told Zhaeda that she needs to get a friend like me and that you support my blog. Thank you for always taking pictures for me without complaining. (Well, most of the time.)
Thank you for understanding my love of student teacher books and thank you for all our late night talks. Thank you for sharing your bed with me when I needed somewhere to go, even though that's not something you like to do.
Thank you for getting me back into Dancing with the Stars. Thank you for all the cuddle sessions and making me feel like I belong at NKU. Thank you for making me realize that I am not alone.
Thank you for pushing me to get involved on campus, and volunteering with me. Thank you for driving me places I needed to go last year. Thank you for introducing me to new music and trying to teach me how to dance.Thank you for sharing my love of Taylor Swift.
Thank you for keeping me sane at Halloween Haunt. Without you I probably would have peed my pants multiple times.
Thank you for trusting me to give you advice and to tell me important things going on in your life. Thank you for making me feel like I matter.
Thank you for being a great friend.
Natalee
I don't know what it is about you, but I feel perfect when I'm around you. You can always make me smile. You're such a kind-hearted person, and you never fail to make me feel good.
Thank you for being weird with me and giving me a sleeve of temporary tattoos and making insane dance videos with me. I will treasure those forever. Thank you for not calling me crazy and running the other way when I first asked you to take a picture of my outfit.
I was scared of you leaving NKU because I thoughtwe would lose touch, but I don't think we have. We may not talk as much as I want to, but when we're together it's like we were never apart. Thank you for driving so far just to meet us for a few short hours together and then having to drive home early the next morning. I know I would not have loved NKU as much as I did if I hadn't meet you last year. I've never gotten so close so fast to someone before. That only proves how amazing of a person you are.
I remember when you told me you wanted me to be a bridesmaid in your wedding and I couldn't stop smiling that whole night. Thank you for making me feel like someone important.
Thank you for sharing your bed with me countless times, even though I'm apparently really annoying to sleep with and I always pushed you up against the wall and stole the blanket. Thank you for trying to make Sunday brunch a thing with me, and sharing my love for biscuits. Thank you for putting up with my obsession with public transportation and not disowning me after the great bus fiasco.
Thank you for giving me your cable log-in so I could watch The Night Manager when I was on vacation. You the real MVP.
Thank you for sharing my obsession with cute boys.
Thank you for being a true friend.
Make sure you let your friends know how thankful for them you are! What are the names of you friends who you are thankful for? What makes your friends so amazing? Let me know in the comments below!

Why Everyone Should Journal & How to Start One
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/30/Why-Everyone-Should-Journal-How-to-Start-Onehttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/30/Why-Everyone-Should-Journal-How-to-Start-OneSun, 30 Oct 2016 22:44:00 +0000
I believe in the power of words.
Words have the power to inspire, abuse, comfort, insult and the power to heal. Most people seem to be aware of the potential harm and motivation words can instill in people, but they also seem to blindsided to the fact that words are a powerful tool in the journey of self-love and the process of healing.
The practice of talking or writing about what's eating away at our brains and causing us trouble is highly underrated and swept under the rug in today's society. Instead of being outright, we dance around topics and tell everyone we're fine, knowing we really aren't okay.
It's become normal to keep everything inside our brains, and that's not healthy. We need to talk to people about what's going on to stay sane and keep our mind in positive places, but not everyone finds it easy to talk over things with other people.
I am one of those people. That's why I turn to journaling.
I journaled religiously in middle school, but I slowly eased out of the practice when I started high school, and by the time I started college I wasn't doing it except maybe once a month. I hadn't noticed how I had practically given up on journaling until a YouTuber I follow started talking about the practice. So naturally I took a trip to Target and bought three journals.
It's been a struggle getting back into the habit of journaling. As much as I love the benefits of the practice, thinking about doing it makes me lazy. Writing takes so much effort! My classic excuse for everything. But just like as with exercise, you may dread it in the beginning, but you will never regret it afterwards. The sense of peace I get after journaling cannot come from anything else (except a good long girl talk).
The feeling you get while and after journaling really isn't something you can comprehend until you try it out for yourself, so grab a paper and pen and let's get you started!
How to Start a Journal
When I was younger I had quite the obsession with paper. I wanted to be an author as a child, so I thought that the more journals and notepads I had, the more that inspiration would hit me. If that's how things worked then I would have been on the New York Times best selling books list at least five times. Sadly, it doesn't work like that though since my name is nowhere close to being on that list. However, I feel the same thing happens with journaling. People sit holding their notebook open, but never write anything because they "have nothing to write about."
I had troubles with this too when I was first getting back into journaling. I mean, I was excited to get in touch with my inner-self and work through the issues ailing me, but when I opened to an empty page, I didn't know what to write. I was stumped. I had millions of thoughts swimming in my brain, but I couldn't figure out what I wanted to write about. I feel like that's something everyone new to journaling struggles with, that's why I'm going to share what got my pencil moving in hopes of inspiring your's to get moving too!
The number one rule you have to remember is that you don't need to think about what you're writing, you just need to write. None of it may make sense, but neither do many of our thoughts, do they? Just write anything and everything that comes to your mind. Try not to filter anything. Take note of topics you feel uncomfortable writing about, because those are the topics bringing turmoil to your mind.
The best way to start if you can't bring yourself to write anything is to just write about what you are doing at that moment. Then from there let things flow, and you'll eventually find a topic to run with as you continue writing.
An example would look something like this:
I'm currently sitting on my couch, typing this out. I feel really overheated because I'm cooking dinner. I made cornbread and my veggie burgers and edamame are on the stove. I keep glancing over because I'm scared the water is going to boil over. That always happens to me, and it's embarrassing because I want to be a good cook but I get bored just watching things cook and I have other things on my mind.
Like right now I'm worried about my ear. I can't hear out of my right ear right now. I just showered, so I'm pretty positive I have water in my ear. This has been happening a lot lately. I wonder why that is. Maybe I should Google it.
The journaling technique described above is called a free-write. I bet you didn't think there were different kinds of journaling techniques did you?
Free-writes and Responding to Prompts
This is my free-writing journal, or rather it's my flexible journal. I use it for free-writes, mantra analysis and to answer random journaling prompts.
I date the top of each entry and give it a name. It could be something simple like, "Brain Dump," or "Currently," or it could be the prompt I'm responding to, or the mantra I'm analyzing.
I get my journaling prompts from two sources: myjournaling Pinterest boardand the bookLet It Outby Katie Daleabout.
Mantra analysis is probably the technique you're probably wondering the most about. A mantra is a short saying that is repeated to bring assurance, positivity and love into your day. They are usually associated with meditation and yoga, and are much more than just repeating the word "om."
The mantras I write about come from a book calledFind Your Happy: Daily Mantrasby Shannon Kaiser. The books has 365 mantras along with elaborations and questions to accompany each. On days where I'm not feeling inspired to free-write, and when I want to get in touch with my inner-self, I'll use one of the mantras and its questions as a prompt.
Letters Never to be Sent
You didn't think I had only one journal did you?
This is my notebook I use to write letters to people, but letters that I never intend to give them. This seems like a weird practice to some. I mean isn't the whole purpose of writing a letter for the other person to read it? Well yes, but just forget about that for now.
The first time I ever heard about anyone doing this was on the Suite Life of Zack and Cody when Maddie wrote Mr. Moseby a very angry email to vent her feelings and it ended up accidentally being sent, but I'm getting off topic.
Many people use this method to vent angry feelings, that if expressed in person, would cause damage to the relationship between the two people. I've used this method for that reason, and after I finish the letter I usually no longer feel angry and realize my feelings were caused by something other than what the person had done to make me angry.
Other reasons I have used this method include: to write about the person to figure out how I actually feel about them (I'm a strong believer in the notion that I never know how I truly feel about something until I write it out), as a practice talk with the person I'm writing to, to "talk" to someone I'm no longer in touch with, or to talk about things I'm scared to bring up in person.
Gratitude Journal
This last one is for all the lazy people out there, or those who still don't think there's any point in journaling.
This technique is the simplest, but the most effective if bringing happiness to your life. At least, that's how it worked out for me.
I started my gratitude journal as a New Year's resolution this year. At the end of every day I write down everything that made me happy that day and everything I was grateful for.
Somedays your list may be shorter than others, but that's okay. Not everyday can befullof happiness and gratitude, but every day will have happiness and gratitude. That's why I started this journal, to show myself thatthere really is a reason to be grateful and happy everyday.
Gratitude is the key to happiness. Don't believe me? Use that paper and pen you got out to write down five things that you're grateful for in life. Then write down everything that made you happy today. You can't tell me you don't feel happier now than you did before the exercise.
Buying a Journal
Am I the only one who gets a rush from buying a new journal or notebook? I know I can't be the only one!
I have six different ones. That's not excessive right? You've already taken a peak into three of them. Besides one I use to keep track of my goals (not pictured in this since it's not a journal per say), the rest of them are empty. But I thought I'd share them anyways to give you more ideas for the style of journal you might want!
I picked up this beauty fromFrancesca'sback in August, and I'm so excited to use it! I haven't decided if i'm going to use it to continue my gratitude journal or my free-write journal yet, though.
This is the other journal in the competition. I got it fromTargetback in April, but it is still available in stores!
I mostly like to journal in the evening when I've got some nice mood lighting, almost like I'm on a date with my journal (that single life though), but I've been trying to get into morning journaling recently. I just really like the idea of putting my first thoughts pf the day onto paper in the morning! Maybe it will even help with remembering my dreams! Plus, then I can drink a cup of coffee and put off getting ready and actually having to face the real world for a few moments longer.
So that's my journaling practice! I hope I've inspired you to start, or get back into, journaling and helped you find something to write about!
Do you journal? What do you like to write about? Are you a night or morning journaler? Which empty journal should I use for my next free-write journal and which one should I use for writing my gratitude? Let me know in the comments below!

Dressing up for Classes: Should you do it?
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/26/Dressing-up-for-Classeshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/26/Dressing-up-for-ClassesFri, 28 Oct 2016 13:15:00 +0000
Why do you always dress up?
The question I've constantly been asked since starting high school. At first I took it as a compliment, but when I started college it evolved into somewhat of an insult in my mind.
I thought that college would be much like high school fashion wise, that some people would always dress up and others would always scrub. I realized quite quickly that was not the case. Basically every girl was wearing leggings or Nike shorts everyday. This was something I avoided as much as possible in high school, so when I still showed up to class in real clothes (I'm against the legging trend), many girls gave melooks. I felt that people were judging me and questioning my outfit choices because they thought I was looking for attention, trying to show off or just trying too hard in general.
Soon I caved and started toning down my outfits and even wearing exercise clothes to class. By the end of my freshmen year, I felt like I had no real sense of fashion anymore. I was so out of sync with what I wanted to wear, that I lost interest in fashion. I had been too fixated on dressing like everyone else. Then, this past summer I got really into fashion again, and I feel like I've finally found a balance between dressing up and bumming it, but only whenIfeel it.
Yes, I do still feel judged when I show up to class in heeled booties or boots, but if I'm truly confident in the outfit, then it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks.
I don't dress up to impress people. I dress up to feel extra pretty and to express myself.
Don't feel pressured to wear a certain item of clothing or dress a certain way in college. Wear what makes you feel happy and confident! Whether that be a dress, a skirt and sneakers, leggings and boots, exercise clothes, heels or just jeans and a t-shirt. The only rule is that it has to make you feel good about yourself!
Below I've included some of my favorite outfits from the past year and a half at college! Be aware that since most of these are about a year old, I will only be linking items I can find the exact link for or items that are extremely similar!
(Yes, I used to have long hair and I miss it dearly! I'm currently growing it out again!)

How to Choose a Major that Suits You
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/20/choose-college-majorhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/20/choose-college-majorSun, 23 Oct 2016 16:00:00 +0000
I've technically had three majors in the two and a half semesters I've been a college student, so I think I have some pretty qualified experience with finding a major to suit you.
Back when I applied to NKU in high school, I applied as an exercise science major. I have a big interest in health and fitness, but I knew that that field just wasn't for me even as I typed that into the application. I was only doing it because I thought it's something I would love, but I'm not sciency at all. I find the topic interesting, but I struggle with anything science related. Science was the only core class I could never take as honors or AP. I even avoided taking a science class my senior year, and instead took two technical electives: photography and web design (what really got my mind hung up on blogging!)
So, during the end of my senior year, I did some research about other majors NKU offers and settled on media informatics. I officially declared that major within the first few weeks of school last fall.
What is media informatics you ask? Well you see, I'm not exactly sure. I knew it had something to do with graphic design, but it wasn't graphic design, so when I tried to explain it to other people I just told them to look it up because I couldn't explain it to them. Bad sign. As soon as I got fed up with people asking me, and me not being able to put it into words, I knew that major wasn't right for me either.
I knew I needed to figure out a new major soon, to make sure I was on track to graduate in four years, so I started thinking about subjects I love and wouldn't loathe pursuing. The first thing that popped into my head was how I missed taking math classes, and that's how math major Caitlyn was born! I've been a mathematics major now since the end my first semester in college.
It's not that easy for some students though, so I've compiled a list of things to think about when going about your search for a college major.
1. Make a list of things you want to avoid in a major and career.
For example, most people I know actually want to steer clear of math as much as possible. If this is you, then you want to avoid majors like chemistry, physics, engineering, and math (obviously). If you don't want to be doing a lot of writing, avoid majors like journalism, philosophy, psychology, sociology and English (duh).
So make a list of things you don't want to be doing a lot of, and use that to cross off majors from your larger list of possible majors.
2. What are you passionate about?
This can help narrow down your options, but using this question alone will not help you find the right major for you. I mean, as I said, I'm very passionate about living a healthy lifestyle, but exercise science wasn't the major for me.
So, make a list of all the things you're passionate about and use it as a general guide on what majors to research.
3. What classes do you feel "at home" in?
I feel at home sitting in a math class. There's no better way to describe it. In high school, I told people that I could fall asleep listening to someone talking about math, not because it's boring, but because I find it relaxing.
Pay attention to how you feel in all of your classes. Are you bored? Intrigued? Fascinated? Tired? Take note of the classes you're actually excited to attend, and think about if that's a subject you would like to pursue.
4. Visit career services at your school.
If you are really struggling with choosing a major, visit the career services center at your school. I never actually talked to someone at my career center about changing my major; however, I was sitting right next to it when I decided I wanted to be a math major, if that counts for anything.
The people at career services are trained to help students find a major and career that is perfect for them, so make an appointment and go to talk someone about your indecision.
I may have never talked to them about choosing a major, but I will most likely be talking to someone in the next couple semesters about careers to go into because that's where I'm indecisive!
Your school has resources for a reason: they want you to use them! So use them!
5. Don't do it for the money or because you feel pressured.
Eliminate from your list the majors you feel pressured to pursue.
A lot of times I've heard students say they don't know what they want to do, so they'll just do something that's popular or that their relatives want them to do. Often times it's something like pre-med, engineering or psychology. None of which are at the top of the easy to pass list, rather they'd most likely be ranked as some of the harder majors. (Not to scare anyone away from them!)
Just know, if you go after a subjectyouaren't passionate about, you won't enjoy it and won't do as well.
6. Don't quit because other people are better than you.
There are always students who drop out of their major because they feel inferior to other students in the major. The whole point of going to college is to learn more, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with riding the struggle bus through your major. Things are going to come easily to some students and not you, but that doesn't mean you should give up.
I'm currently taking the prerequisite class for a computer science minor, and I was very intimidated at first. There are students in the class who talk about things I've never even heard of, and it's only a 100 level class! I find myself questioning if I should really be pursuing a minor in computer science often, but then I do the coding and I get in that flow zone, and I just know it's something I want to continue.
7. Know you don't actually have to go into a career that lines up exactly with your major.
There are people who don't go into careers related to their major, and there are people who use their college major as a way to expand their horizons.
When I was researching all the jobs you could get as a mathematics major, I was amazed at all the different fields grads had went into. There was one guy who majored in mathematics, then when to medical school and became a doctor!Similar to that trend, I've heard of people that major in English, and then go into journalism instead of majoring in it outright. They know what they want their career to be in the long run, but they think they'll benefit from taking other classes they may have not had to do otherwise.
Then there are people who major in one thing and do the exact opposite as a job. However, this usually happens when students stay in a major that doesn't suit them and they aren't passionate about.
Then, there are also the students who major in one thing, and then fall in love with something else after or close to graduation, so they finish their program and pursue something else.
People seem to think that your major in college will define the rest of your career, and that is not the case. Don't feel restricted into staying in one field just because your major is one field.
Remember, just like there is no one perfect college for you, there is no one perfect major for you either. You if you feel drawn to more than one major, maybe consider double majoring or using one as a minor. And trust me, when you find a major that's perfect for you, you'll know it.
Good luck with your major search!
Did you have trouble choosing your college major? What is your major? What made you choose it? What advice do you have for students have trouble choosing a major? Let me know in the comments below!

Child of the Corn

I got to go to my second pumpkin patch of the season on Tuesday of this week, and I was not leaving without taking a photo in a pumpkin wagon. They were the first things I saw when I got out the car, and I planned out the way I wanted to photos to look from that moment up until over an hour later when I actually convinced my friend to let me do it. I just wanted to release my inner child!
If you can't tell from these last two photos, I definitely did become a child while we were there, and I regret nothing.
The pumpkin patch I went to this week a lot more chill than the one I went to with my family a couple weeks ago, which made it the perfect place to end my fall break. This farm was also a lot more child orientated and not nearly as crowded, so it was nice and relaxing. We even played in the children's area for a little bit! They had large wooden replicas of Cinderella's carriage, the yellow brick road from The Wizard of Oz, a huge Jack-o-lantern, a mining town, and even a little Flintstones scene!
Someone really has to start reminding me to take off my hair ties when I take outfit photos. They ruin everything! (Well, except when they fix bad hair days.)
I knew right away what I was going to name this outfit because boy was that farm creepy.
Besides the fact that were more people with pumpkins as heads (there's a photo at the end!) than real people there, making it practically deserted, the corn maze looked like a tornado had rolled through it!(Which is funny because there was literally a tornado warning an hour ago from when I wrote this). On top of that, the clouds were pretty menacing the first half of the maze, and the wind was so bad that the corn sounded like it was shrieking! I thought I was going to die.
So I obviously used a play on the horror film Children of the Corn as the name for thie outfit, but I chose the title for another reason as well. While yes, being a child of the corn could mean I was raised up by young murdering psychopaths, it could also mean I grew up around corn. Like I was raised by the corn in a nurturing way, instead of a creepy killer way.
I didn't actually grow up on a farm, or near any for that matter, but I still feel close to my non-existent country roots. I was born in Tennessee (even though my birth certificate says Kentucky), and I've lived in Kentucky for almost eight years of my life; however, apparently that's not good enough for all the "real" southern girls I've meet around here.
Still, no matter how many times I've been told I'm not actually a southern girl, I will always relate more to the southern life than the city life.
Long story short, I am a southern girl in my soul.
Say hello to my favorite bootsever!
I got these boots for Christmas almost three years ago, but the soles in them cracked this past winter! I thought I would never be reunited with them again because they were no longer being sold at the website my mom got them from. Then, I found them on Amazon for way cheaper than when my mom bought them for me!
I love these boots for three reasons:
1. They make me feel on top of the world because the soles are wooden so they clack every time I take a step.
2. They literally go with everything. Shorts, jeans, dresses, leggings, skirts; you name it.
3. They remind me of my dad's combat boots.
Wearing these with shorts also made me feel like a trucker, but in a fashionable way.
Shirt:HM (not sold online, similarhere)// Shorts:Thrifted, brand is Tommy Hilfiger// Belt:Gap Factory// Boots:Amazon
Okay, but can we just take a moment and look at how creepy these pumpkin people are!? The girl ones were especially scary, because their hair was blowing all dramatically in the wind. I really felt like one was going to come to life and start chasing after me the whole time I was there.
They also reminded me of Melon Lord, and if you understood that reference we are now best friends.
I wish I had a photo of me taking this photo. I'm known to get into some pretty strange positions to snap the perfect shot, and this time was no different. I was squatting on top a wooden horse to take a photo of this creepy pumpkin lady, and I think it would have a made quite the hilarious Snapchat.
I've mentioned this before, but I'm super into photography. I took an intro class at my high school, and I fell in love. Since then I've gotten to play around with DSLR cameras very little. My mom, my aunt a my friend all own DSLR cameras, but I don't get to use them very much. I've used my mom's to shoot soccer photos for my littler sister and my cousin's senior photos last year. I got to play around with my aunt's for a little a week ago at a different pumpkin patch, and then I used my friend's last spring when me, her, and another dear friend of our's had a photo shoot before the end of the semester, and then I got to use it on Tuesday when we went to this farm.
Getting to use her camera this week finally convinced me to start setting money aside to buy my own! I'm looking at the Canon EOS Rebel T5 and the Nikon D5500/D5300 right now. What camera would you recommend for someone on a college budget?
Have you been to a pumpkin patch yet this fall? Is it just me or were the pumpkin people creepy? What's your favorite pair of boots? Do you consider yourself a southerner? Let me know in the comments below!

My Struggle with Body Confidence (Plus, Advice for Coming to Peace with Your own Body)
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/12/Body-Confidence-Advicehttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/12/Body-Confidence-AdviceSun, 16 Oct 2016 17:33:23 +0000
Body confidence is not something the majority of people have nowadays. I mean I may be wrong, but all theresearchI've done says otherwise. How sad is it that we even have to research if people have issues with their own body? The things we have come to.
In honor of National Body Confidence Day being tomorrow, I thought it would be an appropriate time to share my struggle with body confidence. It's something I've been debating writing about for months, and I know if I don't do it now then I won't do it ever. I haven't gotten super personal on my blog for months, but that's what we're doing today.
My Story
I don't remember ever feeling insecure about the way my body looked until I got to middle school. I mean of course, right? Middle school was when we all went through our awkward years (I'm using the past tense because I'm not seeing any awkward middle schoolers anymore!), and around the time that boys and girls realized the opposite gender doesn't actually have cooties.
I started to feel insecure because I didn't look like a lot of other girls at school, specifically the ones that had the most friends and all the guys seemed to be crushing on. The two things I thought were equivalent to being happy, so I thought that if I made myself look more like those girls I would become more likable, to my peers and myself.
Obviously, it didn't work like that. Instead, I became so obsessed with looking perfect that every time I looked in the mirror I found something I disliked about my body shape. Even after losing almost 25 pounds, I would still look in the mirror and think I was fat.
Reflecting back on this I realize how insane I was to think that about myself. I was not overweight in any way whatsoever, but I thought I was because I was accustomed to a culture that picked apart women's bodies and told us we had to be skinny to be beautiful.
I remember going through magazines and not seeing any models that had my body type when I was in middle school and starting high school. Not seeing anyone that looked like me made me think there was something wrong with the way I looked.
I still remember the first time I saw a model with my body type in a magazine. It was Seventeen magazine, and I just remember looking at the girl and thinking, "If I think she's beautiful and she's my size, why I can't I think of myself as beautiful?"
After that, I began to be more loving to my body. I tried to compliment myself, instead of picking apart my appearance every time I walked past a mirror. It was a strange thing to get used to (the fact that I found it strange to compliment myself makes me so angry now), but eventually, it came naturally to me.
Now, there are days where I just look in the mirror like I did before middle school. Just glance at my reflection and continue on with my life. No stopping and thinking, "Ugh , why is my stomach jutting out over my pants?" Or, "My arms are looking a little pudgy." Or, "Gosh, why can't my thighs just be skinnier?"
Just a couple days ago I was getting dressed and had put my jeans on, but not my shirt, so my stomach was exposed. Even just a few months ago I would have at least had a negative thought in the back of my mind, but that day I didn't have any thought whatsoever. I noticed this as I slipped my shirt on, and realized how big of a milestone it was for me. I mean, before this year it has been almost seven years since I could look in a mirror so casually.
This is the part where you think I'm going to write, "and then it was all history! I'm 100% okay with my body now and always will be!"
That couldn't be further from the truth.
I may be much more comfortable in my body now than I was throughout middle and high school, but I know I will still have my bad days. Everyone has those days. But I know that while yes, I do still have my days or moments when I feel disgusting and nowhere near beautiful, I'm so much happier with my body today than I was just last year. Every day I feel more me, more beautiful, and more comfortable in my skin. I know I'll never be 100% happy with my myself 100% of the time, and that's okay. It's not about always being happy, it's about being positive, and that's what I strive to be - body positive.
Body Confidence Advice
Now on to the happy part of this post.
The best thing about my struggle is that I have learned how to love myself as who I am, and not what I think, or other people think, I should look like.
Truly believe that you are beautiful.
You can't just expect to love yourself if deep down you don't love the way you look. One thing I did to get me to where I am today is every night I would tell myself I was beautiful. It may sound like a lie at first, but the more you say it the more it becomes your reality.
Get rid of clothes that don't make you feel good about yourself.
Donating old clothes that no longer fit will relieve a massive amount of stress that you may not even know you had. I was holding on to clothes from my "skinny" days, and it was eating me alive. Up until this past summer, I still had clothes that were up to two sizes too small! I finally donated them this past summer and you have no idea how therapeutic that was for me. Even though I may have never picked them up, or tried them on over the past years, they still silently taunted me from my dresser and my closet. Now that they're gone, there's no more telling myself to lose just a couple more inches just to fit into a dang skirt.
Dress for nobody but you.
Instead of dressing to impress someone, dress in what makes you feel beautiful and confident. I'll be the first to admit that I have worn something specifically to get attention from someone. I learned quite quickly that it never works.Like ever.So there I would be wearing an outfit I didn't even like, and therefore didn't feel comfortable in, but I had to walk around in all day. What a mood killer right? Now I have certain pieces I can wear on a bad day that add a little extra spring in my step when I throw them on.
Don't play the comparison game.
I know we've all heard this one before, but I still know people who haven't learned to give it up yet. You are never going to look like someone else. Ever. Stop telling yourself you want to have legs like Carrie Underwood, or an hourglass shape like Kim Kardashian, or whatever it is you are comparing. Everyone is born with a different body shape, and it's practically impossible for two people to look the same. Why would you want to look like someone else anyway? There's only one you, and just like you can't look just like anyone else, no one can look just like you. How amazing is that? You should take pride in that alone.
Know there is no such thing as a perfect body.
Someone may seem perfect to you, but they may not feel perfect. They may feel uncomfortable in their skin, too. If you approach your own body by trying to make it look perfect, you are never going to be happy because you are always going to find something you wish you could change or improve upon. Instead of focusing on the way your body looks, focus on the way you feel.
Listen to music that makes you feel good.
Music has the power to make us feel better, so take advantage of that! Listen to songs that make you happy, or empower you! If you're looking for some good getting ready or shower jams, be sure to check out the playlist of all my favorite body positive tunes!
Have the mindset of a five-year-old.
Unlike us teenagers and adults, 5-year-olds don't give a crap about what they look like or worry about what they eat. It's weird isn't it, though? We go years of our lives not giving a crap about what another kid thinks of us, but then one day we just wake up and take everything so personal. So when you're stuck in a guilty mindset, think back to when you were little and how you just wanted to enjoy life, not caring if you ate the whole cookie jar, had chocolate stains all over your face, or your stomach was round and you had chubby baby legs.
Know that everything you see is staged or altered.
This is something that really helps me. When I'm looking through a magazine, watching a tv show or movie, and I start to compare myself to a girl, I'll stop myself and think about how they are staged to look nice. Photographers and videographers use the best angle to make models and actresses look their best. If you pay close attention, you'll see how they actually look more like you than you might think.
No number defines you.
Throw out the scale and BMI and body fat percentages. What do they really matter anyways? No one in their right mind is going to turn down dating you because you're 155 pounds instead of 150 pounds or because you're 100 pounds instead of 115 pounds. (For all my girls out there who struggle to gain weight.) The right person will love you for your personality, not your weight, BMI or body fat percentage.
Workout to have fun and be healthy.
This was one of the most recent things I learned, and I believe has made the biggest difference. After I graduated high school I tried to keep running and weight lifting five days a week like I did during track season and in PE, but I did it more as a chore than to just stay active. Soon I burned out and never wanted to go because my heart just wasn't in it, but I dragged myself there anyways. It was awful. The last full month of my freshmen year I just stopped going. I felt so free to not have to worry about making sure I worked out every day. Then I tried a fitness class and fell in love. Now I go to spin every week, not because I feel that I have to, but because I truly enjoy being there! Don't make yourself run 5 miles if that's not something you have your heart in. Find something that keeps you active and keeps you happy, and stick to that - not something that'll burn the most calories.

Think about what your body does for you.
A couple years ago I read about this thought process in a Seventeen magazine. They had interviewed a champion surfboarder who said she always used to be ashamed of how her thighs were bigger than other girls' thighs. Then she realized that if her thighs were like every other girls', then she wouldn't be able to be the extraordinary surfboarder she is. So when you're feeling down about your body, think about what it does for you. It could be something as simple as allowing you to walk or breathe. There's always something to be thankful for.
Be nice to yourself.
If you aren't nice to yourself, who will be? Compliment yourself and congratulate yourself for all your wins, no matter how small they may seem.

Happy Holidays!
Wait...I think I'm a little too soon.
I think I'm a tad bit confused. It feels like summer, looks like fall, but for some reason my subconscious was like, "No it's Christmas-time!"
Just a little three season crossover. No biggie.
I look like a little kid on Christmas don't I?
Walking around campus in this made me feel so off. My outfit colors made me want to start singing "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer," but I was sweating! The sweat dampening my back made me think Christmas in July, but um....it's the middle of October?
It was all a bit disorienting.
Normally, I would never wear a scarf belted. I had seen people do it before, but it just never seemed like the kind of thing I would like. I threw it on like this because my outfit felt too bland beforehand, and wearing it like a normal scarf made me sweat too much. I made it through the day without taking it off, but I'm still on the fence about the style.
I loved how it felt like I was getting a warm hug all day, and like I was wearing a feather boa (which made me feel fab, let me tell you), but I also felt a little silly. The scarf felt like it was adding bulk, and that's not really something I'm looking to add to an outfit.
The best thing about wearing a scarf like this is it saves you from Marilyn Monroe moments! My campus is crazy windy, so usually wearing a skirt is out of the question, but having something heavy like a blanket scarf to hold it down prevented those embarrassing moments from happening!
Scarf:Go Jane(Under $20!!!)// Tank top:Rue21// Bra:Victoria's Secret(Only $20!!!)// Skirt:Charlotte Russe (old so similarhere)// Belt:really old (similarhere)// Shoes:Restricted (similarhere,hereandhere)
Blooper photo of the week!!
I had a few I could've used, but I chose this one because it reminded me of a friend from high school who would always say, "Wiki wiki." Like they were mixing records, like a DJ? Is mixing the correct term? Whatever the term was, it was always so cute when she did it, so this photo is a tribute to her!
Is anyone else having trouble deciding whether to dress for the weather or the season? Have you ever worn a scarf belted before? What ways have you been stepping out of your fashion comfort zone? Let me know in the comments below!

How to Make Sure You Don't Skip Class
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/09/Skipping-Classhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/09/Skipping-ClassSun, 09 Oct 2016 14:28:32 +0000
How to tell if someone is a liar, they respond no to the following question: have you ever been tempted to skip class before?
I feel like every semester there is always that one class. You know what I'm talking about. That one class you just never want to show up to. Sometimes it's even two....or three classes. Not that I know by experience or anything...
Bottom line, working up the motivation to go to class can be hard somedays, so I put together some of the tricks I use to keep myself from staying in bed and watching Bates Motel all day long.
How to keep yourself from skipping class:
1. Think about all the money you are paying to take that class.
Okay, your parents or grandma or aunt or whoever may be paying your tuition, but that shouldn't make you feel more guilty for skipping classes. I mean think about it: if you're paying $10,000 in tuition a semester and taking 15 credits, that meansone 3-credit class costs about $2,000. Just doing that math makes me cringe.
College is already expensive enough, so do yourself a favor and don't skip class! You don't want to risk failing and have to pay to retake the class. Just think about how you're flushing $50 and some change down the toilet each time you stay home from class.
2. Get more sleep!
This one is crucial. I find that my friends who have morning classes (or even early afternoon classes), have trouble getting up for class mostly because they stay up way past midnight! This is not a good idea in the slightest. Why would you sabotage your health by cutting back on your sleeping hours, and then sabotage your grades by not going to class? I understand that everyone has those days where sleep is hard to come by, but it shouldn't be happening every single day in the semester.
The number one reason I find that people go to sleep so late is because they had procrastinated homework until the night before, they are procrastinating by watching Netflix or scrolling through Facebook all night, or they're just on their phones too much before bed. Rewatching all your favorite episodes of Supernatural, or staying up late to talk to your crush, is not worth the harm lack of sleep does on your mind and body.
3. Think about the people in your classes.
I have four class that I have friends in, and those classes are the usually the only way I ever get to see them. There's no way I'm going to skip class if that means I won't get to see them!
There's another way to look at this too, but you have to promise not to judge me first. You promise? Okay good. Think of all the really attractive people in your class you plan to skip! This works so well for me it's kind of sad, but hey whatever gets you to class right!?
There's no way you're skipping work right? You can't just call into work and say, "Hey boss? Yeah, I don't feel like coming in today." You'd be fired just like that.
This works really well for some people, but not for me because my work is actually really lenient and would let me do that. Forever grateful for having the best job ever, but that doesn't mean I do it all the time. I've skipped out on work only 3 times this semester and it was because I didn't get enough sleep the night before. (Which takes us back to tip #2)
5. Think about your grades.
There is no way you are going to pass a class if you never show up. This could be for multiple reasons: your professor actually takes attendance and gives points for it, you have to turn in all your assignments in person, you miss tests and quizzes, or because you just miss lectures. This is one of the first things I do if I'm having trouble working up the motivation to go to class. I have to keep a 3.25 GPA to keep my scholarship, so thinking about my grades is my number one motivation to attend class.
Is it ever okay to skip class?
Yes. Yes. Yes.
The point of this is not to tell you that you should never skip class, it's to help you find motivation to attend class if there are no impending circumstances. The truth is life happens, and sometimes you can't make it to class. This is 100% okay. Don't beat yourself up too much if you do end up missing a class.
Here are the questions I ask myself when I'm legit thinking about skipping class:
1. How sick are you really?
First off, are you actually sick, or are you just trying to get out of class? If you just have a cold or allergies then I don't think you should be skipping class. Just be sure to bring tons of tissues, cough drops, and water. However, if you have something that is highly contagious or something like a stomach bug, then I highly recommend staying home. You don't want to put other students' health at risk, and you'll never know when your stomach will act up.
2. Will you miss any tests, turn-ins, quizzes, attendance points or group projects?
If you answer yes to any of these then I would say skipping is out of the question (unless you can afford to lose attendance points). Since almost every college professor will not accept late work or make-up tests, you should never skip out on days that you have to turn assignments in or days there will be a test. And please, please, please, don't be that person who doesn't show up for the group project work or presentation. You will never make any friends that way, and they may tell the professor so you get an eve worse grade on top of the one you'll be earning for skipping class.
3. Will you feel worse if you go to class?
Somedays you just have to take a mental health day.
My first semester of college I definitely took a few of these. The transition to college can be stressful for some people, or it can make you realize things about life or yourself that you never realized before. No matter what's going on in your life, sometimes it all becomes a little too much and you have to take a break.
I would say I'm guilty of skipping classes for petty reasons such as feeling like I don't have my life together, or relationship issues or being way too stressed, but the thing is I don't feel guilty. I never feel guilty for skipping a class for a mental health reason. If you are having a really off, or bad day, and you know that if you go to class you are just going to feel worse or you can't even get yourself to get out of bed, then please don't feel pressured to go to class.
Flash back to tip #2 again. If you are so sleep-deprived that you can't stay awake without being hopped up on coffee or energy drinks, then I honestly don't think you should be going to class. Mostly because sleep deprivation has way too many negative effects on your health, but also because you shouldn't be falling asleep in your classes. It's disrespectful to your classmates and professor, and there's no point in going if you aren't going to listen to the lecture.
I have just a few things left to note before I wrap up.
If you are going to skip class, remember to always email your professor letting them know why you won't be in class! It's also a good idea to ask what you'll miss, to show initiative and make the professor like you a little more.
Lastly, I'm no health expert so just do what feels right to you! I hope this helps you get to class more often!
Do you have classes you don't like showing up for? If so, what are they? Have you ever skipped a class before? For what reason? Let me know in the comments below!

Lacing up for Fall

https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/07/Lacing-up-for-Fallhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/10/07/Lacing-up-for-FallFri, 07 Oct 2016 17:00:00 +0000
Yes I am very well aware that we are over two weeks into the fall season, but apparently Kentucky loves playing games with my heart. (Please excuse my awful reference. I'm listening to the Backstreet Boys as I type this.) We've been having high temps in the 70s and 80s all week, so it was back to shorts and tanks tops. I'm not going to complain though. As long as it's not in the 90s or below 50 degrees then I'm great.
Winter is quite easily my least favorite season, because I don't fare well with the cold. I have Reynaud's, so my hands turn purple when I get cold. It's not pretty, and I get embarrassed when other people see it, because my hands will literally look like they belong to a dead person.
Enough about that though. Let's get on to the outfit!
There is no way to express my love for this shirt in words. Only in emojis, but that's not possible right now so just imagine 5 pages of cat heart eye emojis.
I had been looking for a lace-up/strappy shirt of any kind since around April of this year, so when I saw this on a rack in Express I knew I had to have it. I actually bought it in white as well, and buying things in multiple colors is not something I like to do.
The best thing about this specific shirt is that while it may look really low-cut, so long as you wear it with the correct bra/bralette, you won't be baring your whole chest to the world. I had to make sure of that before buying them because that is not really my thing.
I got these shoes this past winter when the lace up trend started creeping its way into the fashion world, and I was obsessed as soon as I put them on. They are my little babies. I'm especially protective of them because there was a mishap with shipping them, and I almost didn't get them. Never again will I almost lose them.
Green button up:Apt 9 (similarhere)// Black tank:Express // Bralette:Aerie // Shorts:Tommy Hilfiger (thrifted)// Belt:Gap // Shoes:Urbanog (similarhereandhere)
This weeks blooper photo features a Caitlyn who is very done with life. Before these photos were taken I had just finished taking my very first programming test, which is my least favorite class. It's not that I don't find programming cool, it's that I'm not a big fan of the professor. I was specifically upset this day because he gave us 30 minutes to take a quiz that took me like 10 minutes and then didn't let me leave early. How rude.
Does anyone else have those professors that never lets anyone leave early? What's your least favorite class this semester? Are you a fan of the lace-up/strappy trend? Is the weather playing games with your heart too? Do you even know what song that lyric is from? (If so we are now best friends!) Let me know in the comments below!!

What I Miss About High School
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/09/28/Miss-High-Schoolhttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/09/28/Miss-High-SchoolSun, 02 Oct 2016 15:45:00 +0000
I am 110% aware that reminiscing about high school long after graduation is not something that is looked very highly upon. According to other people, saying that you miss high school makes you lame and stuck in the past, but not to me.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with missing the way your life was one, two, four or more years ago, so long as you aren't trying to make your life the exact same as it once was. Looking back is fine, but trying to replicate how things were in high school is when I think people start to go a little too far.
I'm not trying to recreate my high school experience in college, I just honestly really miss high school. It may be because I decided to move up and out of the state where I went to high school, or maybe it's because my high school, and the people in it with me were just really freaking awesome, or maybe it's a combination of both. Whatever the reason, to prove that there's nothing wrong with it, I thought I'd share the things I miss most about high school.
Going to football games
Football games are the epitome of the stereotypical high school experience, am I right?
I loved going all out and decking out in the game's theme colors. Adorning my face with glitter and face paint was just as exhilarating as getting lost in the crowd of the student section. I loved how the whole school came together as one at the games to cheer on our team. My favorite cheer was the "I believe that we will win" one, and it breaks my heart that I won't be able to do it again since NKU doesn't have a football team. I mean I could go to soccer or basketball games (which I do), but they just aren't the same.
Track practice
Track was my life in high school. I counted down the days until the season started and was always the hype girl for it trying to recruit people and getting them pumped for practice. To this day, when people tell me they did track I feel like I have this huge bond with them because then they then I know they understand my whole high school life.
I made some of my best memories at track practices, meets and on the long bus rides to the different schools. Plus, I made some of my best friends through track!
Spirit weeks!
I looooved spirit weeks in high school! They were my favorite! They may have always been the same themes just creatively renamed, but it was so fun to dress up for them! My favorites were Wittle Wednesday, Decade Day and Toga Day! Here's a throwback to senior Caitlyn with long hair. Sometimes I wish I could dress like this everyday! I mean who doesn't want to look like an ancient Grecian all the time?
Homecoming and Prom
I was that typical girl who was obsessed with Homecoming and Prom in high school. I didn't care if I had a date or not, I was going. I wasn't going to squander a chance to dress up and dance all night with my friends. I may be an awful dancer, but there's nothing better than dancing besides your best friends. I've only had one chance to do that since coming to college, and it was when my friend took me as her date to her sorority formal. After that night I told her I have to be her date to every formal because I require dances in my life.
The theme for my junior prom was Poseidon's Paradise and it was in the aquarium. Also, when we went out to dinner an old man called me a mermaid. Basically a dream come true.
My senior year's prom theme was Enchanted Forest, and I was obsessed with how my dress matched the theme.
All I want to do is get all dressed up and go out again, but I don't have any reason to do that. Like why aren't dances a thing in college? I don't want to party (so not my scene), I want to go to a formal dance!
Journalism
I was on my high school's newspaper my junior and senior year, and it was a big love of mine. I really enjoy writing (obviously) and that was outlet to express it in high school.
You know how there are those things that seem fun and cool, but then you try them out and they really aren't? Well journalism was actually cooler than it seemed. We got to go to state and national conferences and compete in a chance to win awards! I even won an award at the state conference! To this day I am beyond proud of myself, because I never win anything.
I could have joined the newspaper here, but I didn't like the vibe they gave off when I looked into the program. Plus, if I had joined then I wouldn't have had time to create my blog!
Not having to share my room with someone
Boy do I miss this. I've always been one who loves alone time, and I don't get much of that in college. Mostly because all of the roommates I've ever had are always home. It's not that I don't like my roommate, it's that I like to be able to stretch and just chill without having to worry about what someone is thinking about me.
Plus, my high school bedroom was the bomb. I had these Christmas lights strung above the three windows above my bed and it was the best thing ever. I really need to get some lights in my dorm room.
Excuse the awful quality, this was back when iPhone 4's were a thing.
Not having to pay for all my food
Boy did I take this for granted. I mean I love going to the grocery store and all (#grandma), but I don't like getting to the checkout lane and the clerk saying, "Okay that'll be $55.67." I cringe inside every time. I've gotten better at bargain shopping, and having to go to the store less, but it's still saddening to see all that money draining from my bank account.
Being on the same schedule as my friends
I loved how I was basically on the same schedule as all my friends! We'd get up around the same time, get to school around the same time, hopefully have classes and lunch together, see each other after school and during sports.
This is definitely not something that is possible in college unless you try really really hard to plan it that way. However, you'd have to be in the same major and outside organizations to pull it off. Therefore, it's practically impossible. I never realized how much I took being the same schedule as my friends for granted until I came to college.
Living 30 min tops from my friends
This may just be a me thing, but I live so far away from all of my friends now that I'm in college. Not only is this because I chose to go to college across the country from where I went to high school, but also because all the friends I did make in college live so dang far away.
Living far away from my high school friends is hard all year round, because I want nothing more than to talk to them and see them everyday but that's just not feasible. It's even harder since I'm three hours ahead of all of them. I wish it was them who were three hours ahead of me, because I don't like to stay up late.
I just want to be able to wake up and go visit my friends, and not have to worry about driving for an hour or having to book a plane ticket. Obviously it's not like this for all my friends during the school year, as I do have friends who live in the dorms like I do. This mostly applies during summer time, and to all my friends who attend different colleges in different states.
Having friends in my classes
Back in high school I knew someone in every class, and it was wonderful because it made boring classes bearable. It doesn't work like that in college, because you can't talk or anything while the professor is teaching. There is little to no time in college classes to chat because they are mostly just lectures. It's awful.
I was so excited to have classes this semester where I already knew people, thinking it'd be all laughs and giggles with work wedged in between like it was in high school, but it's not like that at all. Having friends in classes just gives you someone to sit with, someone to study with, someone to partner with for group projects and someone to ask for help; not someone to make the actual class fun. It sucks.
Do you miss your high school years? What do you miss the most about high school? Do you feel like you see your friends less in college too, or is that really just me? Let me know in the comments below!

Back to School Apathy
]]>
https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/09/30/Back-to-School-Outfithttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/09/30/Back-to-School-OutfitFri, 30 Sep 2016 17:00:00 +0000
When I first saw this shirt I knew exactly what I wanted to wear it with, but this outfit is not that. Originally I planned to wear it with khaki shorts to play up its "back-to-school" vibe to the max, but it was always either too hot to wear a long-sleeve and now it's a tad too cold to wear shorts.
There goes that outfit idea.
I'm actually okay with my plan not playing out though, because I loved how this particular outfit turned out. Instead of going full out back-to-school I kept it at just the baseball tee, my watch and oxfords, and then paired it with my boyfriend jeans and tied an anorak around my waist to create that kind of "I don't care about school" vibe. I think it hit it right on the mark. Especially with my hair being the crazy mess it was.
Okay, it may have been a tad crazy, but I actually really like this hair style.
My hair is finally long enough for the first time in almost a year so that I can braid it! This was a huge deal for me, because I braided my hair nonstop my junior year of high school, and I've had a pang of the high school blues lately. So I've been braiding it as much as possible since I figured out that I can at the beginning of the week.
I got the idea to end it in a bun from one of my friends, and I was scared to try it because I'm awful at making buns, but it turned out so cute! Totally going to be doing this a lot more. Especially on rainy days like yesterday when there was point in doing my hair anyways.
I really wanted to take photos while sitting in a classroom and sitting on the edge of a desk to further the idea I had in my head, but that wasn't happening. Maybe next time right?
(Yes I put way too much thought into these things sometimes, but I love having a creative vision with fashion because it's one of the few places where I do have an actual vision.)
Not sure why but I kind of have this habit of hooking my thumb through my jean's belt loops when I put my hands in my pockets. Anyone else do this?
And of course I have my trusty thumb ring, because going without it makes me feel naked.
Fun fact: all of my watches don't work EXCEPT this one. I actually didn't even know this one still worked until halfway through the day.
Shirt:Aeropostale// Utility jacket:Charlotte Russe (similar savehereand splurgehere)//Jeans:Charlotte Russe (old so similarhereandhere)// Oxfords:Payless (old so similarhere)//Watch:Target (similarhere)
This isn't really a great blooper photo, but when I saw it I immediately thought of this caption:
Just playing with my cape. Does that make me a superhero or a vampire? Hmmm.... you decide.
Do you like to tuck your thumbs into your belt loops? Do you actually take care of your watches so that they always tick? Do you like to dress up for back to school? What do you envision when you think back to school fashion? Do you give up on your hair on rainy days too? Let me know in the comments below!

Don't Tease Girls Who Spin (+ Tips for Starting Group Fitness Classes)

https://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/09/09/Group-Fitness-Classeshttp://collegewithcaitlyn.com/single-post/2016/09/09/Group-Fitness-ClassesSun, 25 Sep 2016 17:00:00 +0000
I've recently discovered a new passion of mine: spin class.
Shocker right? What a stereotypical female thing to be in love with. But I don't care, it really is amazing, and contrary to most belief, an extremely difficult 45 minute workout.
I'll be honest, I used to be one of those people who teased girls that went to spin. I mean how mainstream is that? And you're just biking, it can't be that hard. But then I took a chance and realized just how difficult it can actually be.
I went to my very first class five weeks ago. It was the second day of fall classes, and I just wanted a nice workout to get me moving, so I strolled into a beginners spin class.
I was sore until Saturday. So yeah.
In that first class I struggled with keeping up and learning all the different moves and lingo, but when I came back the following week it came so easily to me.
Two weeks ago I stepped up my game and I went to my very first normal spin class-not one for beginners. It was then that two guys swaggered in looking like, "Man this is gonna be easy." Boy did I feel sorry for them. Within the first five minutes they were making faces like, "Holy cow!" and taking tons of breaks. I was silently laughing in my head at their pain. I was thinking about how naive they were thinking they could just stroll into a spin class and find it easy....when I realized I had done the same thing a mere three weeks ago.
I used to tease spin class enthusiasts because I thought spin class was dumb. Why? Because I had never done it, and I always wanted to. I projected my fear onto the class itself. It had nothing to do with the class, it had everything to do with me.
Spin isn't just a glorified workout, it is an honest to goodness intense workout. If you don't believe me, go to a class yourself. Or ask the cocky guys who came into class last week.
Since I was hesitant to go to class in fear of being seen as stereotypical or being made fun of, I thought I'd share my advice on joining group fitness classes.
Go with a friend
This is perfect if you are scared of looking dumb or think you're going to chicken out. I went to my first zumba class only because my friend wanted to go, and we had so much fun! Tagging along with a friend is a great way to try new classes you normally wouldn't try, and a way to have more laughs in the class. Fitness doesn't always have to be serious!
Start with a beginners class or tell the instructor you are new.
I highly recommend starting with beginners If your gym offers beginners classes ! In those sessions the instructors take more time to go over the different moves, lingo and form so they are perfect for people who don't know what they're doing.
If they don't offer intro classes it's totally okay to just tell the instructor you're new. This helps them out, because if they have a lot of newbies then they know to explain the moves and to tone down the workout.
Bring water!!
Number one rule: stay hydrated. Make sure you're drinking enough before the class starts and have water to drink during the class as well. Most classes I have been to even carve out time in the class for you to drink water, so take advantage of it and bring your own so you aren't fighting over the water fountain. If your instructor doesn't give you time to drink water, it's up to you to choose if you need water or not. Don't feel pressured to go thirsty the whole class just because the instructor doesn't say, "Okay water break!"
Don't position yourself in the back!
Just like you shouldn't sit in the very back of class, you shouldn't be in the very back of fitness classes. If you're in the back you won't be able to see what the instructor is doing, and it may be harder to hear what they're saying. I'm not saying you have to be smack dab in the middle, right in front of the instructor. Just make sure you're somewhere that you can see and hear clearly.
Don't compare yourself to the regulars.
This is something I learned really quickly when I started taking yoga classes last semester. I thought I was amazing at yoga because I had taken yoga classes in high school and middle school. Um, wrong. I was nowhere near as bendy and strong as the other people in the classes. I remember being so disappointed that I wasn't as great as I thought I was that I considered quitting.
Then I realized that I'd rather push through the hard then and slowly grow, rather than give up and have to start all over again months later.
It's 100% okay and normal, to not be the best person in the class.Especiallyif you just started out not too long ago. You could be comparing yourself to someone who has been going to zumba for four years or someone who grew up doing yoga or a pro cyclist. So don't compare yourself to others in class.
Don't get down on yourself if you can't do everything yet.
This goes hand in hand with the last tip. If you compare yourself to others you may end up trying to do something you aren't ready for yet. Don't get down on yourself if everyone else is doing the advanced version of the exercises and you're still doing the modified beginner version. It's actually great to start out doing the beginner version, because then you can focus on form and then you will be less likely to injure yourself.
My second class I may have been able to keep up easier with the instructor, but I definitely didn't have everything down pat yet. I had forgotten that you needed extra resistance on the bike so you could stand, so when I went to stand up on the pedals my left foot flew out of the foot holder and my leg scraped the side of the bike. Luckily I think the only person who noticed was the guy behind me. My shin is still has a bump and bruise and this happened a month ago! So like I said, it's totally okay to start out easy so you can focus on getting everything right andnothurting yourself like I did.
Show up early!
Never, ever, evershow up late to a group fitness class. It's disrespectful to the instructor, distracting to the other students and then you'll have missed the warm-up.
Showing up early is the way to go because then you have time to get yourself in the right mindset, use the bathroom before, get all the equipment you need and introduce yourself to the instructor. That last one isn't necessary, but I highly recommend it to people who have never gone to a fitness class before. By letting the instructor know you're a beginner they are more prone to helping you out and making sure you aren't doing anything that will cause you to injure yourself.
Group fitness classes have become one of my favorite ways to get my workout on, so I hope my advice helps you if you're interested in them as well!
Remember, don't look down on something just because you don't understand it or have never done it yourself.
Have you ever taken a group fitness class? Maybe even a spin class? What are your thoughts about stereotypical "girl" sports? Let me know in the comments below!
It's finally officially fall!!! Y'all don't understand how excited I am. I don't even care how basic it is to be obsessed with fall, because I truly do love the season. I like to say summer is my favorite season since that's when my birthday is, but honestly fall has my heart.
The warm color scheme, cozy days, and brisk foggy weather is my aesthetic. All week I was scrolling through pages and pages of fall inspired photos on Pinterest, and even created twoboards just for fall! #noshame
There's just something about the feeling that autumn evokes ya know?
I had to literally restrain myself from wearing this shirt before fall began, so I definitely jumped at finally being able wearing it yesterday. I never really used to be the biggest fan of orange, but after last year when I experienced my first Kentucky fall since I was 6, I've been hardcore crushing on orange.
All of the most gorgeous things are orange: pumpkins, fall leaves, the tint golden hour brings and carrot cake. (I know it's not actually that orange, but just give me this one okay? It's my favorite!)
I really wanted to break out my brand new over the knee boots to wear with this outfit, but the weather just did not want to cooperate with me. It was 90 degrees and humid here in Northern Kentucky yesterday.
And people say global warming isn't a thing.
You might recognize this necklace from a couple weeks ago, when I wore it in myNo Boyfriend Necessary post. If you did see that then you might have noticed that the third layer from the necklace is missing. I sort of accidentally broke it. Oops. No problem though, I just replaced it with my Kentucky necklace!
Also, is it just me or does the above photo scream fall or what?
Fun fact: I've always loved doing this pose ever since the 8th grade when I saw a model posing like this in Seventeen magazine.
Outfit details:
Shirt:H&M (in store only; similar onlinehereandhere)
Booties:Qupid(they also come indark brownandblack!)
Yay more funny photos of Caitlyn! I had two that I really wanted to share, but I thought this one was more hilarious because of my facial expression. I mean what even is that? Am I disgusted, scared or nervous? The world may never know.
Actually I was falling, hence the title. Clever right?
I hope you first day of fall was fabulous! It definitely made me very happy that I could finally break into my fall wardrobe without being judged intensely.
Which season is your favorite? What do you love about fall? What fall related thing are you most excited to do? Let me know in the comments below!

Dealing with Overwhelm in College

I have got to be one of the most easily overwhelmed people on the planet. Trying to plan more than one thing in a day instantly sends a wave of overwhelm through my body. Even if I'm just trying to plan two simple things like doing my laundry and seeing a movie with someone. For some reason, in my mind doing multiple things in one day is too difficult and not at all feasible.
I've definitely gotten much better with this though, especially since starting college last year. College can be extremely overwhelming. I'm not going to sugar coat it. It can get scary real quick with all the assignments, projects, tests and due dates piled on top of clubs and your social life and work hours. It can get rough man.
But it doesn't have to be like that.
I mean, it's definitely something I've been struggling with a lot since the fall semester started - I mean I had a mental breakdown the first week of school because I didn't feel organized enough. (I don't wanna talk about it.) But there are tricks I use to keep my stress levels down to a minimum, so I thought I'd share my tips on how to cope with overwhelm in college.
Wednesdays are when I feel the most overwhelmed, because that's when I have the most going on. I have class 11:00-11:50, work from 12:30-4:30, class from 4:50-6:05 and then sand volleyball games around 7:00. Not including whatever I decide to do the few hours between when I wake up and go to my first class, or what I have to do after volleyball. Basically I'm just go, go, go on Wednesday and it burns me out.
When I realized that I can't be the only one having trouble coping with the busy college lifestyle, I decided to write a whole post with my tips for dealing with overwhelm. So let's do this thing:
Tip#1: Know that you aren't the only one.
Feeling like you are the only person going through something makes it a thousand times harder, so don't let yourself feel that way! There is not a single college student I know that just breezes their way through it. Like I said, college it hard, even for us high school valedictorians.
Basically what I'm trying to get across is that when you're feeling super stressed and alone, just try to remember that every other college student it feeling the same way.
Also, listening toA Little too Muchby Shawn Mendes always helps me. #Bae
Tip #2: Write everything down.
Write down your schedule. Write down your to-do lists. Write down your homework. Write down everything you want to remember. Basically, use a planner, keep to-do lists, utilize the notes app on your phone and journal. Staying organized plays such a huge aspect in keeping overwhelm under control, so find a system that works for you and use it.
The second part is something that not everyone is always willing to try, but something that everyone can benefit from: journaling.
Between walking to classes, getting ready in the morning, what I'm thinking about before bed, where my mind wanders while doing menial tasks in class or at work, I think a lot of things and it can be real hard to keep them all straight. Journaling literally saves my racing mind. I have no idea how I ever went so long without doing it. Just writing down what happened that day really helps, because it removes those thoughts from my brain and allows the more important ones to have room to breathe.
I also find that writing down my thoughts really helps me feel more calm and relaxed. I used to journal almost daily, but now I'm just trying to do it weekly. I definitely felt more at ease when I did it everyday though, but that's not feasible with my busy schedule right now.
Tip #3: Get moving!
Exercising is a great way to deal with stress. It lets out all of your negative emotions in a healthy way, so long as you aren't overdoing it. Personally I like to run or lift weights when I'm really upset because then I can just zone out.
Walking is also another way to get your body moving! Plus, it's not too difficult to get those steps in on campus since you have to walk to classes anyways. One of my favorite times of the day is when I have to walk to or from work, because it feel nice to just be outside and not sitting on my bum.
So find what makes you feel good and do that! It doesn't have to be anything intense like run 10 miles, it could literally just be taking the scenic route on your walk back from class.
Tip #4: Reconnect with nature.
Ever since coming to college my appreciation for nature has grown tremendously. I cherish any time I get to spend outside - even if it's 90 degrees before factoring in humidity or below freezing and snowing. There's just something so calming about being in nature. Even if that nature is just a grassy hill with three trees next to your dorm.
This kinda connects with my last tip, because one way I really like to do this is from my walks to work. Besides walking to work though, I have three other ways I like to enjoy the outdoors: watching the sunset, going hiking and doing homework outside.
I'm a professional sunset seeker. This past Saturday I wasn't having the best day, but after watching a magical post-storm sunset I felt so much more grounded and ready to tackle life.
Hiking is something I only just got into this summer, but now I want to do it every week. I'd do it everyday if I could. There's just something so relaxing about being in the middle of nowhere with no distractions, and feeling like a part of something bigger than just school. I could write a whole post about hiking honestly.
One of my favorite things about going hiking is that I literally have no signal whatsoever. Don't freak out!! This is a good thing because it helps me escape from my fast-paced life for a couple hours and recharge my brain. Plus, then I'm not hearing the thoughts of everyone I follow on social media; the only thoughts I'm hearing are mine and those from whom I'm with.
Doing homework outside is really such a great thing to do. Not only will you get some fresh air and vitamin D, but then you aren't in your dorm all day. I don't know about you, but when I spend all day in my dorm I feel cramped, claustrophobic and like I have way too much going on. That's why I take any chance I get to do homework outside.
This is actually a photo from last Monday of me typing out this post. Blogception?
Tip #5: Don't forget to smile!
This one's a biggie. You may have heard this before, but I'm going to reiterate it anyways. Smiling even when you're not happy has beenscientifically provento lift your mood, so show those pearly whites!*Cue My Shiny Teeth and Me by Chip Skylark*
Tip #6: Take care of yourself.
When my life is moving so fast that I think I'm going to keel over, I like to slow down and have a me night. Sometimes it's something small and I just do a face mask or paint my nails, and other nights I make dinner, then jump in bed and watch Netflix all night.
Find what makes you happy, and then when you're feeling extremely overwhelmed, make sure to take time to do something just for you. It could be something simple like buying those boots you've been wanting for months, getting yourself Starbucks or taking yourself out to dinner. Just do something for you.
Tip #7: Remind yourself daily how awesome you are.
I stole this from Katie Dalebout's bookLet it Out, and it's probably one of the best things I've ever done. Basically all you have to do it set up reminders on your phone with encouraging statements that go off at certain times to give yourself a little pick-me-up. It's like a present for your future self.
Everytime my phone buzzes with one of my reminders I feel significantly lighter, more confident and overall just in a better state of mine. Here is an example of one that I have set to go off every Monday before my least favorite class:
Another thing you could do is write quotes on sticky notes and stick them in random places for you to find later. Maybe put them on random pages in textbooks or books you plan to read. You could also just stick them in plain view: like on your desk or mirror. I know a popular thing to do is put a variation of, "You're beautiful," on a mirror.
So those are all of my tips! I hope you found at least one of these helpful, and that your semester doesn't get too crazy. If you ever do feel way too overwhelmed, take a step back and just breathe. You got this! I believe in you.
